--> Things I watched today:
+ Episodes 901-909 of Degrassi TNG. I'm into new territory for me. SO excited for the new season to kick off in a few weeks. My favorite characters are Jane, Fiona and Declan, so I'm glad I picked up Fi as an RP character :)
+ New True Blood. Every episode of this season (and last) has been sickening and ragey. It's a friend groupwatch activity or I might quit the show. I am bored with half of the plots this season, a few are interesting, and some are just downright horrifying (not *scary*, but... awful.) I need to write about this, I just can't stomach the thought.
+ Hounddog. I've seen the movie before, and I liked it better and worse on the second viewing. Explanation: I could appreciate it this time through as a strictly "southern gothic" venture into storytelling. That said, even knowing that everything is going to be a bit over the top, the excessive symbolism got to me. Some things work on the page, or work in experimental film, and just don't really translate in a serious way to film, at least not a film that seems to be taking itself "mainstream" for the majority of the film. Hounddog needs to find its niche earlier on and stick there, rather than dancing in and out of stereotypes and relying on banjo music. It also thinks that it is racially progressive when it falls back on the same old "magical negro" syndrome of many old southern lit--especially films. That said, it isn't a bad film. And the controversial rape scene is hardly even one, even when compared to my metaphorical issues with True Blood.
+ Childrens Hospital, the first episode. This used to be a web series and has now been picked up by Adult Swim. During July they'll be running the webisodes as full episodes, and in August "season 2" will begin. The show mocks hospital dramas, and is hilarious. The cast is first rate, borrowing from top comedies like Party Down and Parks & Recreation. I can't wait to see more, and I'm so glad I'm catching this from the beginning.

--> Also reading? Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. I love it so far, but I will refrain from further comment until I get caught up and can do a write up. OMG yes! this week was boring and the sex scene 2 two weeks ago was disgusting. I just started watching the show this season (I know the basics though and i've seen a couple of stuff online) and I had no idea that it was going to be this sickening.

I'm having to re-evaluate some of my friends who thought that sex scene was hot. I get a wave of nausea every time I think about it.

Wow. That guy is one impressive weirdo.

And jesus, Hounddog had its problems - I liked it more because I WANTED to like it than I actually liked it - but the rape scene was not one of them. I could easily name you ten underage sex/rape scenes that are more graphic and upsetting than the one in Hounddog. And, like, a million regular rape scenes. You want to pick on it, sure, go for the piles of cliches, the uneven pacing, the annoying child actors (not counting Dakota herself, who's fine, though I didn't think she was all that great), the fact that Deborah Kampmeier pussed out and cut all the potentially "upsetting" scenes besides the rape itself...seriously, there's so much to complain about, but the rape scene ain't one of them.

But then, Dakota was Hollywood's golden child. I guess people are letting go now, because I didn't hear any complaints about content in The Runaways.

I'm glad I never tried to get into True Blood. It seems like it would just piss me off.

Yeah, word on all of those points. I have much more respect for a film like--fuck, I always forget the title--with the Silent Hill girl. Tree land? Similar in some ways, because it has that Southern gothic appeal, but so much darker (AND LIGHTER!) and successful.

I was shocked there wasn't more of an outcry against The Runaways. I guess because it didn't get a wider release. And the rape/sex was all off screen.

If I could watch True Blood without thinking about it, I would be fine.

Tideland. Which was uber dark in a million ways, but ironically the underage sexual content was cheerful and positive. WTF, Terry Gilliam, you're delightfully odd. (Though in the book the character is 12 or 13 so it's a little less...outcry-worthy? I dunno.) Yet Tideland had a little girl in neglectful, abusive, perilous situations AND making out with a guy in his 30s and no one blinked. I guess because no one saw it. Or because the kid wasn't Dakota Fanning, Shirley Temple 2.0. I don't know that Tideland succeeded on all levels (and pretty much all critics HATED it for some reason), but it was gutsy, at least, and imaginative. And Jodelle Ferland > Dakota Fanning.

I suppose I'd just be called a pervert if I complained about not seeing KStew and Dakota get it on onscreen ;)

I think everyone wanted DFan and KStew to get it on in Runaways, including them and the director. Damn age laws preventing them from being full-bodied on the same bed. (Er, when I say everyone, I mean everyone except Cherie Currie. Who had a shockingly internalized homophobic attitude.)

That really is ridiculous. Especially since they're totally doing it offscreen ANYWAY.

...well they are.

And yeah, I'm not trying to say this in a nasty way, but she strikes me as someone who has more than a few issues. Not that she's bigoted or a bad person, just, issues. Which reminds me that I really should read Neon Angel now that the library has it in stock.

Issues. Up. To. Here.

I really wanted to write Cherie fic for femgenficathon, because oh my god the potential, but RPF is kind of a no-no.

In the ficathon, but since I've met her it's a bit awkward-er. (too lazy to log in, since I'm RPing today)
