aphrodite_mine: a woman makes a truly goofy face (random - jaye face)
Which TV show did you start watching in 2013?
Hannibal, The Fall, Orange is the New Black, Sleepy Hollow, Top of the Lake, Happy Endings, Teen Wolf, Orphan Black, Masters of Sex, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, @midnight, Dracula, The Bridge.

Which TV show did you let go of in 2013?
Bob's Burgers pretty early on. I kept forgetting it was on and for me that is pretty sure sign of losing interest. Parks and Recreation, for the most part -- at least, emotionally let go. I also would have dropped Sleepy Hollow, but lady is super fond of it. Degrassi.

Which TV show did you mean to get into but didn't in 2013? Why?
Bates Motel had some appeal, but was so rapey that I just... couldn't. The Wentworth pilot is engrossing and very Australian and full of women, but it just kept getting pushed to the backburner. I also tried the Danish version of The Bridge and just... was not interested. At all. The Whose Line reboot. Everything was off about it. The Fosters.

Which TV show do you intend to check out in 2014?
Black Sails, and Getting On, at least for a trial run. I'll finally get past the first episode of Hit & Miss. Possibly Penny Dreadful.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2013?
I was pretty cranky about the "changes" in Project Runway that ended up being totally useless. And New Girl. When your favorite character is a cat, something's probably wrong. American Horror Story: Coven. I figured it would be racist, but I had no idea.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2013?
Orphan Black and Top of the Lake are a pretty serious tie. Honorable mentions are Hannibal, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Masters of Sex.

Fall TV

aphrodite_mine: (community - thumbs up!)
Reminded by escritoireazul to write this up... Here's what I'll be watching this fall -- at least for a few episodes.

SUN: Masters of Sex (house watch)

MON: Sleepy Hollow (house watch), Hostages (TONI COLLETTE)

TUES: New Girl (at least until I get a read on where it is going now), Trophy Wife (NATALIE MORALES)

WED: American Horror Story (IDEK, house watch)

THURS: Parks & Rec (until Rashida leaves), Elementary, Glee (ONLY the Demi Lovato episodes)

FRI: Comedy Bang! Bang! (is it really a new season if the current season is happening now?), Dracula (house watch? POSSIBLY NOT.)

... which is a refreshingly open schedule, considering that we're amidst an X-Files rewatch, and just started AHS season one.

rest easy

Okay. Here. I'm going to tell myself that posting this is a kind of work decompression and not procrastination. Okay. I'm convinced.

I've banned myself from tumblr until the following is complete:
1. [community profile] galentinesday  first draft
2. draft is sent to prozacpark and ~~2nd beta???who??do you want~~
3. finish Community season 3
4. watch tonight's episodes of Community, The Office, & Parks and Recreation I imagine I'll be back in full online mode on Sunday or Monday when my work schedule is taken into account. From there, the plan is to #fakedateflail and wander around Scrawnee* until my rarewomen assignment comes which is when moving panic should start kicking in as well. PERFECTION!

*Scrawnee, the derogative shorthand for the derogatively nick-named "Scrawnee Wasteland" is a 30-or-so acre plot of sallow farm land between Pawnee and its non-Eagleton neighbor, Scranton. Residents rarely mix, choosing to travel in other directions (Pawneeans through the comparative metropolis of Eagleton; Scrantonites via the geographical mystery that is Wilkes-Barre, PA [don't ask questions]), but occasionally a Scranton child will be seen playing with a Pawnee raccoon, or a Pawneean enjoying a Scrantonian burger.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge day 9: In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

[footage not found]

And here is my Day 7 video, as promised. I actually like doing this. So. It may be a thing that I do periodically. Hello, and welcome to my room mwahahaah

As for snowflake day 10 talking about someone whose fanworks/presence you want to CELEBRATE.. skipping, for now, because I want to rave on [personal profile] gloss some more, but lack the spoons at the moment! And really, I do it quite often. :P

And Day 11 has now posted while this window has been open, waiting for me to finish: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Here, have the entirety of The Inside available on YouTube. If you require downloads, I or[personal profile] prozacpark would be happy to hook you up as the series is very unlikely to receive a DVD release, and the creators encourage finding the series by whatever means.

Oh, look, Day 12! In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. If at all possible, try to pick a smaller or rarer fandom, one that maybe doesn't have the following you feel it should.

To switch things up, I am going to link to three beautiful arts!

under the cut because of PRETTY -- one image has drawn gore )

Day 13: In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some."

I am perpetually looking for:
  • The Office fic with IC Karen Filippelli
  • Parks & Recreation fic where Ann has agency
  • Community fic where Britta is fallible but not pitiable
  • Excellent books that I can read for free as EPUB
  • Any/All roller derby femslash AUs
And finally, for now, day 14: In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Skipping this one as well, though if you'd like to leave a comment with the name of a character, I'll write a short drabble about someone/something THEY love!

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge : In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I decided to rec the oeuvre of three people rather than just three works. Enjoy!

I'm sure you all are getting tired of hearing me brag on [personal profile] gloss , but seriously. Here are a few of her lesser-appreciated works (that I love most!)
Women Who Run with Whywolves (Adventure Time, Fionna & Cake &/ Marceline)
The Sparkle that Stings (Happy Endings, Penny/Alex)
Halfway to human (Homestuck, Jane gen)
Heartbreak Jamboree (Parks & Recreation, Ann, Ethel/Muriel)
Built to Last (Our Idiot Brother, Ned/Liz)
she is the list of my voyage (She's the Man, Olivia/Viola, ROLLER DERBY)

[personal profile] prozacpark  is the best in the business.
tv rec: "Pretty Little Liars" + why you should be watching it
more on fandom and slash, this time with stats and numbers (yes, this is the one you keep seeing on your tumblr feed, and for good reason!)
the rape of Inara: on heroines, consent, and women's sexuality
her pieces for BitchFlicks: a feminist reading of "The Ring" and madwoman's journey from the attic to the television - feminism in horror films
most developed character on "Buffy": on Joss Whedon's wisdom
gender, fantasy, and the women of Dragon Age
women, race, and agency in narratives: or why I stopped reading vertigo's Fables
tv rec: "The Inside" - seven reasons you should watch it now (I believe she has another Inside meta, but LJ is so iffy right now it's hard to track down)

This is starting to sound like rec-your-friends-hour, but [personal profile] chaila  is a legitimate talent. I love that she vids in small fandoms, and that her thought processes are so carefully played through.
Parable (Octavia Butler's Parables series)
Keepsake (Never Let Me Go)
Rabbit Heart (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles)

can't figure out for the life of me why i'm procrastinating on taking a fucking shower when i'm exhausted and need to go to sleep but whatever.
not sure how much i'll be around this week but i made it home safe from CONvergence and oh what a delightful weekend it was (that sounds sarcastic. it is not sarcastic. that also sounds sarcastic. maybe it is the all lowercase.) turns out, i do a lot of awesome brainstorming on long drives by myself. a few brief notes
  • make blog post about epilepsy. that fucking brain disease.
  • make blog post about your connection to native culture. maybe. edit it a lot before it goes life. be careful. do research.
  • blog about chiropractic.
  • the secret thing that only gloss will read. yeah you know what i'm talking about. yep.
  • jane cosplay take two. remember the mustache this time. sigh with shame. make your mother take the photo. possibly outdoors where the neighbors can see.
  • watch burning love
  • but really you should finish x-files season 6 first
  • try community again?
  • ann raises her hand and leslie, politely calls on her. um, leslie, she says. remember the time you accidentally handed out the binders of your wizard fanfiction at the clean water committee? (you promised not to ever mention that again, leslie hisses)
aphrodite_mine: barrettes in reddish hair read 'feminist killjoy' (parks and rec - wheee)
In this, the inaugural year of shipswap (at LJ), I have asked for:
  • New Girl - Jessica Day/Cece Meyers
  • Parks & Recreation - Ann Perkins/Leslie Knope, Ann Perkins/Ben Wyatt, Ann Perkins/Lucy
  • Game of Thrones - Cersei Lannister/Sansa Stark, Cersei Lannister/Brienne of Tarth, Cersei Lannister/Jaime Lannister
  • Homestuck - Jane Crocker/Roxy Lalonde, Rose Lalonde/Vriska Serket, Roxy Lalonde/Nepeta Lejion
  • The X-Files - Monica Reyes/Dana Scully

More details below!

Totally reeling from a series of nightmares last night. I came home and took a nap, because sometimes I just need to recharge after a long week, picked up T from work, came back and watched a bit of TV and then went back to sleep. Fast forward to 4AM and I'm suddenly awake, screaming. T peers in, asks if I'm okay. According to her, it was a full-blown scream. She was freaked out.

Read on if you want to, however warning for mental illness triggers, continued Parks & Recreation mindfuck, pregnancy triggers, and gore/death. Not -- thankfully -- all at once.

why would you do this, brain? )

... Yay?

And by it, I mean my longest fic ever AND Homestuck. HOLY BEJESUS. Yesterday was eventful!

Title: play the song without the hook in the third line
Info: Parks & Recreation as Imagine Me & You (minus the happy ending, sorry)
Summary: Ann’s getting married, and as the Parks Department Deputy Director, it’s Leslie’s duty to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. And that’s the problem: it does.

It's over 9,000 words, you guys! *victory dance*

It feels so weird to actually be caught up and not have a gazillion pages to read today until my eyes feel like they're going to fall out. But, oh goodness, I'm so happy that I took this journey. I'm sure I'll write more about it in my monthly media post, but oh my. I love all of the characters so much.

Other stuff...

It's the weekend! I made it past the one-week mark on my new meds, and for the most part? I feel awesome. This is so good. The weekend looks pretty calm from here: tonight I have a TV date with [personal profile] prozacpark  and [personal profile] meganbmoore  (and Fringe. May have double-booked... oops) and then tomorrow is volunteering at a telethon (!!!), lunch at Lambert's (where they throw rolls at you) and The Hunger Games sometime in the afternoon/evening. And then Mad Men is back on Sunday! AIEE!

 Things that I did today:

1. Tidied up fivetimesbb idea into something manageable (two crossovers out of five agree)
2. Finished my part of the rarewomen matching spreadsheets
3. Shopped, briefly
4. Drove an hour and a half with two passengers and said only one sentence (oh, introversion!)
5. Thought about recast_bigbang (It starts at a wedding.)
6. Thought about New Girl and zombies (Jess makes the first kill, screaming and flailing wildly with the only weapon available, her crochet needles. Cece is surprised by how quickly she becomes really fucking good at shooting a rifle.)
7. Thought about a Parks high school AU (Ann feels herself slipping deeper and deeper into Leslie and Lindsay's over-lapping shadows as they move farther and farther apart.)
8. Held up a score board
9. Drove an hour and a half with two passengers and talked slightly more
10. Thought about how awesome roller derby is. And it is. Awesome.
aphrodite_mine: barrettes in reddish hair read 'feminist killjoy' (goddesses)
[personal profile] gloss  already covered things here... I just feel like I should say some things. I wrote a thing about the distressing neglect of the Leslie/Ann friendship during this season. And my general rule is to quit a show when rape jokes start happening (Up All Night, I am looking at you.). While Parks hasn't gone there, the lazy sexism and writing -- that every other person on the planet seems to fucking love -- are just as offensive to me.

I mean, for Christ's sake, I've cried about three HOURS total this week. Over this show. Often at work.

I want to hold on to the show, hoping that it'll show inklings of the thing I once loved... but at this point? I don't want a season 5. I don't want to have to make that choice to NOT watch. Because I'm going to have to make that choice. I can't keep doing this to myself. (I actually quit my little freelance job as a recapper because the thought of watching last night's episode twice made me want to throw up.)

And, I know myself. I know I'm going to watch until it isn't on the air anymore. And I'm going to cry and end up some dead-inside hollowed-out version of myself. I'm all... mike drop, walk off. Until next week.

aphrodite_mine: barrettes in reddish hair read 'feminist killjoy' (mmmmm)
Dear friends,

Do I want to write:

+ Ann/Leslie, the roller-derby-comes-to-Pawnee spec-script-ish idea
+ Ann/Leslie/Boys, the always-queer poly AU
+ Ann/Lucy, Ann/Leslie, the becoming-an-adult-doesn't-always-mean-these-things-fit-in-tidy-boxes idea
+ Something else? ...Something not even Parks? ...Something not starring Rashida Jones? [Okay, no. It has to be Rashida Jones. My pants say so.]

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW NOW even though it will be awhile before I properly start because recast_bigbang is GOING to get done first. DAMMIT.
