aphrodite_mine: (do revenge - iconique)
I've had a bit of a tough time determining that I have anything to say lately, I've been trying to keep my head down and live, basically. As this is a public post, I'll keep the personal out of it and focus on some media.

Books
I've started reading the 20th anniversary version of Heir to the Empire, inspired by Delusions of Grandeur podcast. As represented there, it holds up well, and reading the author's commentary is really engaging, especially regarding what Zahn was and wasn't allowed to do. It is slow going because I'm out of practice for fiction, but enjoyable.

Movies
Finally (after over a year of obsessing over it) rented We're All Going to the World's Fair from the library. Not sure I would have gotten the trans dialogue without reading interviews and commentary, but the movie is richer with it. Even without it, what a FEAST. The lead actress (on screen for almost the entire runtime) is beyond incredible. It as so much to say about the experience of coming of age online, and while I was never a YouTube person, I felt myself acutely represented. It is also very much a first narrative feature, but I'm incredibly hopeful that Shoenbrun's next film works out some of the kinks. I'm absolutely ready to make I Saw the TV Glow my entire personality in a way that I haven't felt about media in awhile.

After browsing a few services I also followed a whim to watch The Nightingale (The Babadook director's sophomore feature) despite previously deciding that I wouldn't do so. It turns out that past me was by far the wiser. The film is exponentially worse than I had expected, even with fast forwarding through the three (THREE) prolonged rape scenes. There's a narrative racism that I don't think Kent even has any idea that she's perpetrating that really made me sick. DNF, but read up on the ending, and it goes exactly where it telegraphs it is going to. Is there some art here? Maybe? But it feels so much rougher than The Babadook, and makes clear that the psychological broad strokes there are more or less endemic to Kent's filmmaking.

Television
Our Flag Means Death season 2 was ultimately so disappointing. Ashoka wasn't very good. But Deadloch, DEADLOCH was excellent. I'll take it.

Podcasts
I'm very much mourning the end of "Baby Geniuses," but have found a few nice shows to pad out my listening profile, including "A Colossal Waste of Time," a Homestuck recap podcast from a 2024 perspective, "The Popcast" with Knox and Jamie, and "Text Me Back!" with Lindy West and Meagan Hatcher-Mays.

--

It has been a nice uplift to make plans. So far, I've secured a babysitter (and tickets, mostly) for Love Lies Bleeding opening weekend, I Saw the TV Glow opening night, Chappell Roan's solo tour stop in St. Louis, and a family trip to Table Rock Lake.
aphrodite_mine: two women wearing army hats steal a kiss (random - vintage love)
Having recently listened to Criminal episode 212 "The Fasting Cure" I would love recommendations for stories of turn of the century female quacks, cult leaders, and alternative medicine purveyors. I think this is absolutely a trend, and an extremely curious response to the medical establishment of the time and the overlapping women's movements.

I find it easiest to consume podcasts at the moment, but I'm not opposed to recs in other formats.

THANKS BUDDIES!

I've been offline so long I hit the end of my Reading Page. Hi.

Movies (5/16): [REC]. I had a commentary typed out but deleted my draft accidentally so we'll just leave it at "fine."

TV Seasons (3/11): Party Down, season 2. Feels a bit like a dream, since I spent so long in season 1 fandom life.

Albums (8/11): Gracie Abrams, Good Riddance. Dedicated listen twice. I love what she's doing with repeated lyrics and songs that feel like mantras.

Kate Davis, Fish Bowl. This deserves to be a top 10 album of the year. Comparable to Mitski's Laurel Hell or gosh, Punisher, but so much weirder. Just brilliant. I'm on my... 6th listen. It came out Friday, and I didn't get to listen until Saturday morning.

Books (1/5): Process! by Mike Paton and Lisa Gonzales. Speed read for work.

Podcasts (4/8): The Dead Authors Podcast, episode 40. Hosted by Paul F. Thompkins "as" a time travelling H. G. Wells, this episode features Virginia Woolf, played by Mary Holland. It is quite lovely. The podcast is recorded from live shows (sigh) but this one is worth pushing through.

Pretend podcast. The current season is called The Stalker. I truly have no idea what is going on. If stalkers/stalking fascinate you, I'd recommend the series.

Oh No! Ross and Carrie. Recent episode is a re-broadcast of Carrie's talk for Skeptics in the Pub on Trauma Pseudoscience. This was a good and welcome wake up call for me and helped cleanse my Instagram habits a little so I stop absorbing nonsense.

New Recipes (7/12): Two smoothie recipes I'm referring to as "Green" and "Orange." Green didn't fly; kale is just so incompatible with sweetness. Fight me. Orange is a winner, but takes literally a full orange per glass, so we're a bit more limited supply.

Shrimp and Orzo. We loved this. https://www.howsweeteats.com/2021/04/one-pot-shrimp-and-orzo/ We left out the lemon because I forgot to buy it.

Chicken and Tortellini Alfredo. Half of us liked it, but the barrier for repeat is all of the older humans, and that didn't pass. Sigh. Might make tortellini alfredo without the meat, since it was very easy and that was the preferred item.

Honey and Soy Glaze Baby Potatoes. Recipe from instagram. Very strong soy/garlic when what it seemed to call for was MUCH heavier on the honey. Added a lot, still could have used more.

aphrodite_mine: (annihilation - in the thick of it)
After the two-week illness marathon, I got a bonus sick day from norovirus! That was fun!

I'm committing to [community profile] bethefirst, though I'm not sure what I'll write yet. Maybe Allison Ponthier's new music video "Character Development" since it is a queer dream with multiple universes to choose from. (To sell it a little, AP plays an alternate version of herself who writes romance novels. She tries for her latest hit, borrowing from traditional m/f romance tropes while bemoaning her history with men. Then queer magic happens!) If Chappell Roan's video for "Casual" drops soon, that may also be a candidate - queer mermaid alert!

No big watches or reads, but two more album listens as they're simpler to do while working.

Julia Jacklin - Crushing. This is the album before her latest, Pre Pleasure. I keep coming back to Pre Pleasure as a meditation on intimacy and emotional connection and Crushing doesn't quite get to that peak, but it is an excellent album. I think she's really stunning.

Searows - Guard Dog. I'd heard a song or two prior to a broad recommendation in the Phoebe Bridgers subreddit, but took that as an excuse to do an album dive. Yes - his voice is almost a dead ringer for hers, which is wild. Unfortunately, that does set up a comparison. His album stays more or less on a limited range of emotional notes. It isn't bad, not by any means, but doesn't stretch very far. I love quite a bit of it.

I haven't listened to Gracie Abrams' "debut" album (not sure how This is What it Feels Like isn't an EP, but whatever) Good Riddance because I'm sure it will put me through the ringer.

(for the public feed: got my COVID dx after 3 years on Monday)
(for all: am now COVID free, apparently!)

*

Started watching Severance and it is wonderful and weird and interesting so far. We had big plans to watch on my sick mornings, but then G was positive too and we had crabby twins and it was easier to just sleep.

Also started rewatching Party Down (first watch for Liz!) to prep for season 3 and dear GOD I am still so obsessed with Casey/Henry. Lizzy Caplan is just so extremely GOOD. And now I want to rewatch Masters of Sex but I don't actually want to do that, I am pretty sure.

*

Movies (4/16): Trolls (2016). After catching snippets over the last month, I finally caught the full movie twice last week. It is the twins current favorite movie and stops meltdowns, so it is on often. I gave it a 3 on Letterboxed, but now I'm wondering if I need to revoke that, because there are a lot of really... gross things happening? There's also a lot that's cute and fun and by GOD they love the music (G sings along, y'all!) but the antisemitism is real nasty and all of the voice cast but Anna Kendrick and Ron Funches I'm like "but why." Anyway.

*

My mind apparently needs about 15 hours of sleep per day to get real creative anymore, but I have a free book/movie idea for anyone with the writing stamina for anything longer than 1,000 words (that's pushing it for me lately). Stars are Rebecca Hall (Laura "Lou"), Emma Corrin (Coral), Bryan Tyree Henry (still kicking around name), and Rahul Kohli (Rafael). I want to talk about them a lot, but know I can't do a damn thing with 'em. They're (eventually) a foursome!

I'm now perpetually offline, it seems, but I have a few updates. Mostly on my goals for the year! Everything else is work or home and more or less smooth. That's a good thing. Here's my status so far.

  1. Watch 16 movies

    1. Encanto: Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Some odd directoral choices were made here, and some key cast members were missing and were felt. That said, Stephanie Beatriz is delightful and I didn't hate spending an hour on this. We fast-forwarded the bit with Lin-Manuel and the children's choir.

    2. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Realized belatedly that I hadn't watched it at ALL last year, so it was an easy remedy. Was nice to watch with someone new as well. What a joy to see enjoyment of my favorite from someone I care about.

    3. I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Absolutely loved this but for the last 15 minutes or so. This is my first Kaufman-directed film, so I'm not sure if it is a choice that is worth excusing, or more of a case where more restraint should have been added. Jessie Buckley is just magnificent.

  2. Complete 11 TV seasons

    1. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, season 5. Kicked up the notch on drama with a mostly cohesive/chronological story that I enjoyed quite a bit. Also de-centered Anakin - amazing how that works out.

  3. Dedicated, album-order listen to 11 albums

    1. Beabadoobee, Beatopia. I like quite a lot of these songs, but it was frustrating to listen to the album only AFTER hearing all of the ones I like separately. Not a disappointing album, just a disappointing process of discovery.

    2. SZA, CTRL. Need to give this another go, considering how much I like SOS. There is quite a lot of inter-song dialogue which is a big negative for me.

    3. Sam Smith, Gloria. Not a Sam Smith fan as it were, but the outrage over their latest video made me curious/want to give them some streams. This is another I'd actually like to spend some more time with, as I think there is an interesting narrative going on with the holiness (despite "Unholy") of queer identity. Also "I'm Not Here to Make Friends" is a bop.

    4. Julien Baker, Little Oblivions. With new boygenius on the horizon, I wanted to give Julien's solo work another good chance. While I love her leads on boygenius, I am just not feeling this.

  4. Read 5 books. LMAO GUYS. We'll see.

  5. Complete 5 pieces of fiction

    1. Simple, Pam/Karen, The Office. A bit of a cheat since I had most of this written in a draft, just really honed it down into a double drabble. I think I'm happy with this.

    2. Your nightdress on the floor, Olive/Elizabeth/Bill, Professor Marston. This isn't quite what I want it to be, but it scratched an itch while I continue poking at a few other ideas for them.

  6. Share 8 impactful podcasts or episodes

    1. Dead Eyes, season 1. Finally wrapped this season. I've heard that season 2 finally realizes the full premise of the show, and while I find the industry information fun, I'm not sure I can abide such intense naval gazing for another season.

  7. Try 12 new-to-me recipes

    1. Mushroom Carbonara (with 2nd variation with bacon and peas). Less bacon is absolutely essential. Peas were a nice ad. Good creamy sauce.

    2. Sushi bake cups. The second-best type of recipe where we all loved it but came away with a lot of ideas for how to make it better next time. I want to try a full pan bake rather than cups.

  8. Deep clean of the back room. Progress is VERY good. It is unlocking the need to do a deep clean of all closets in the house as things need to migrate around to new homes.

Album Listens (12/10)

Julia Jacklin, Pre Pleasure: Quite the atmosphere piece. I've listened completely twice now, and it is, in a weird way, difficult to select individual tracks for my rotating playlists, because the album as a whole piece is such a cohesive mood. Which isn't so say that there isn't movement, or excellent guitar. I like it a lot. I like her lyrics, and the way the music moves.

Muna, Live at Electric Lady: This live EP really showcases the expert musicianship in the band. Taken, August (a Taylor Swift cover), and Anything But Me are highlights, but this version of Silk Chiffon is just... next level. There's some awesome mixing, AND Naomi does verse 2, showcasing her absolutely perfect voice.

*

New-to-me Recipes (18/12)

Salmon and Udon Stirfry: Made this for my birthday dinner, and it turned out really good. The salmon is kept spice-free, adding a really clean taste to balance out the flavor fest of saucy udon stirfry with bok choy, peppers, and my favorite recent food purchase, furikake! The sushi sauce makes leftovers a LITTLE bit too fishy if served without salmon, but that's really my only critique.

Slow-Cooker Boursin Chicken Pasta: I'd never had Boursin cheese before, but this recipe looked so creamy and good that I couldn't resist. In the end, it was all a bit... bland? Essentially the cream cheese, chicken (shredded), and pasta. No one hated it though, so we're going to attempt a version two with some sun-dried tomato.

*

We're wrapped episode two of A League of Their Own (so good) but otherwise haven't had the energy or... anything for watching much. We're consider turning Hulu back on for Abbott Elementary, (possibly) The Patient, and What We Do In The Shadows.

For my birthday, Liz and E got me a beautiful Coleus plant. My other exciting purchase is a new sheet set and pillow. I'm truly an Old.

Movies (16/15): Do Revenge was fucking delightfully camp and I liked it a lot. There are some third act issues, but I'm so willing to look past them for the most part! [personal profile] havocthecat noted the biggest issue (it is slightly spoilery) here. I'm bummed that such an instantly-iconic film has that particular thing attached.

I hit "skip 100" for the first time in a long time, and am sorry for my absence but not really sure how to remediate it. In short - love and miss you all, feel weird commenting on things too far back, offering virtual hugs. My more-or-less singular "me time" time has been a bit tricky as E is extra clingy to me on the times when I'm home, and especially home as the solo parent. I'm lucky if I get a single episode of Call the Midwife in, but am not really complaining. It is nice to just snuggle with her.

TV Seasons (13/10)
Finished Rutherford Falls, s1. Very hit and miss on tone in an effort to get through what seems to be largely set up for s2, which is odd? But I didn't dislike any of it, and there is some very good material. Season 2, so far, is much more even.

We tried Paper Girls and HATED it, but your mileage may vary of course.

Full Album Listens (10/10)
Miel, Tourist Season. Lovely, dreamy, precisely the opposite of her podcast personality, though that is worth checking out as well! Her cover of "I'll Be Holding" is absolutely pure gold.

Podcast Recommendations (9/10)
Punch Up the Jam, specifically the Mel-hosted run, which is through Episode 1 through Dec. 24, 2020. Have I recommended this show before? Oh my god, I haven't! The premise is the host(s) and guest(s) select a song, typically one that is more or less universally loved/famous. They break down the song, usually with much hilarity. Then, present a new "punched-up" version of the song. Sometimes this is a straight-up parody. A great segment, primarily in the 2020 episodes, is a formal music breakdown from musician Rob Moose (who has done strings on just about every indie pop album in the last 5 years, Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher and Copycat Killer included). Highly recommend the episodes on Ginuine's "Pony" (must be deeply immature, but you can imagine the topics) and Dashboard Confessional's "Vindicated."

Also, I'm almost finished with Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, Season 1. It is quite good! Better(?!?!) than season 5. I'm enjoying the new characters' characterization quite a bit. Tatiana Maslany is excellent. The show does make some interesting sound effect choices, but I'm willing to overlook them.

New Recipes (16/12)
Cajun Chicken and Pasta, recipe from Taste of Home (linked). Wow, okay, no one needs that much Cajun seasoning unless your Cajun seasoning is weak af which Slap Yo Mama is most certainly not. That said, love that the sauce is nice and mellow, offsetting the CAJUN flavor. The recipe also doesn't specify how much tomato, and my recommendation is "more than you think" especially if you have made your chicken CAJUN. The tomatoes are a nice, fresh touch.

Blogs for Work and Sales for Work (Both past goal) :)

aphrodite_mine: (portrait of a lady on fire - side by sid)
TV Seasons (12/10)
- The Wilds, s2. That sure ended, didn't it? It has been cancelled, so forever the wildest deus ex machina cliffhanger, but at least not a terrible ending for anyone I care about. No idea what I'd ever write about for this show again, TBH.
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars, s3. Some good multi-parters, some more dull. I'm mostly enjoying it, still!

We're trying to finish Rutherford Falls (s1) before diving too far into new shows, but did watch the pilot of She-Hulk and it is so very silly and fun. Also planning to watch A League of Their Own, and maybe Paper Girls

Books (4/10 - still)
- I'm making progress in The Annual Migration of Clouds by Premee Mohamed, and love it as much (more?) as I thought I would. It just takes me AGES to read now. I'm... a little shaken up by the climate + abortion conversation playing out here, but don't know what to do with that terror.

Podcast Recs (8/10)
- Orphan Black: The Next Chapter is now available for free. I'm really enjoying it, despite a little eye-rolling at everyone who is still enmeshed 10 years later. I suppose that's fiction for you. Tatiana Maslany is a really gifted narrator and voice actress - she does ALL the voices. I'm swoony over her Delphine. She has a new show on the same network (Realm.fm) that is supposed to be akin to Fleabag, but with sci-fi aspects, and I'm cautiously interested. It is called Power Trip, if you'd like to track it down.

[personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange recs:

I ended up having to default, but for some reason the universe saw fit to gift me THREE amazing stories. There's a few other gems in the collection that I want to highlight.

it feels like sinking in by kimaracretak (Shirley, Rose/Shirley) - dark, moody, murderwives energy
Bloodlines (Fairy Tales - Little Red Riding Hood) by havisham - the wolf is an allegory
Will you bloom bright and fierce (The Wilds/Annihilation, Martha) by Edonohana - how did no one write this crossover before - how did I not write this crossover before
Observances (We Will Always Live in the Castle - Shirley Jackson) by thethirdseventh - quiet and reserved horror
Everything Is Fine Now (Us, Zora and Umbrae) by scioscribe - delicious turn at the end

*

New Recipes (at least 15/12): Slow Cooker Mushroom Potatoes. Y'all, it was bland af. No one liked it.

*

Blowing through my work-related goals, because that's how I do.

aphrodite_mine: (hannibal - holding a grudge)
There's lots of other things to say, but I'll have more time next week and [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange is live and I received THREE FABULOUS INCREDIBLE STORIES and I feel very overwhelmed and grateful because these are all so very much my shit and make me (weirdly) believe that I could write again. Not that I hadn't been believing that, I guess. But. I do now.

Thank you, thank you. (I am pretty sure SOME of the authors are here. Hi. <3)
aphrodite_mine: (pepe king prawn - cool dude)
I'm not doing great at the Internet right now, including dropping my summerofhorrorexchange assignment, which, as a rule, I don't do. I still have no idea what I would write, if I were aiming to finish it. Got nothing.

That said, lots of new media stuffs to talk about.

Movies (14/15)
Last Night in Soho: Look, I'm not saying that men can't make movies about women (or whatever other gender distribution you care for) but I'm pretty sure THIS man (Wright) shouldn't make movies about THESE women. One of whom is clearly tExpandspoilers )

Cha Cha Real Smooth: This one had me won over for about an hour before reality set in and I fucking hate this guy, but also, I still kind of love him and WHY is Dakota Johnson so hot and moving when her character isn't written AT ALL. Probably the biggest gap between how much I liked it while watching (I LIKED IT SO MUCH YOU GUYS) and post-watch thoughts. I just wish we had a movie that's actually about a guy being good at hosting parties for tweens, or a movie about Dakota (Domino? WAS HER NAME ACTUALLY DOMINO YOU GUYS?) and Lola. Also, is the Jewish culture totally different around here, because I was never invited to a single bar or bat mitzvah, and yet somehow the girl no one wanted around her her mother who none of the parents liked (????) were invited to every single one. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

TV Seasons (10/10)
The Clone Wars, season 2. Getting steadily better, but Anakin is still Anakin and space battles are still fucking boring.

Full Album Listens (9/10)
Soccer Mommy, Sometimes, Forever: Grungier and stickier than color theory, with roughly the same repeatable tracks. Less cohesive as an album, but I like the sound just a smidge better, and love the sonic evolution. The guitar and bass here are chef's kiss.

Metric, Formentera: After giving a cold hard pass to their last album, I was planning to skip this one as well. I even tried the opening track, the 10-minute art piece "Doomscroller" and quit in a panic because, well, I was having a mild anxiety attack. NPR convinced me to try again, and "Doomscroller" is worth the initial angst. Around the middle minutes it transforms and the journey is worth it. I don't plan on listening to the song ever again, to be honest, but I'm glad I did. There are a few tracks on the rest of the album (title track included) that are really, really great.

Recipes (goal met)
Slow Cooker Jambalaya Risotto: Good flavor, needed more heat and for the rice not to be overcooked. Sad.

Creamy, Cherry Tomato Garlic Pasta: A+ LOVE a savory cream sauce. (Got this one from Instragram)
aphrodite_mine: (paprika - podium loves this song)
Complete TV Seasons (9/10): Finished Obi-Wan. It was lovely. Feeling really strange and upset about people who don't understand/like the inclusion of Leia or Reva.

Resumed watching The Wilds season 2 after a hiatus. These very very silly boys have won me over.

Full-Album Listens (7/10): Muna's self-titled release is great, but it's no Shaking Hands with Elvis. Still, it'll be a great show in August, and I'm glad we're going. "Solid" is an anthem, omg.

Podcast Recommendations (7/10): While I will NOT be watching the Te/l Sw/n documentary, I'm still fascinated by the cult. Jennings Brown visited Oh No Ross and Carrie to promote his new podcast and mentioned that the Mormon Stories podcast has an extensive (3 hour+) interview with Te/l's childhood best friend and hoooooo boyyyyyyyy truly terrifying to see a monster in development.

I've booked Mom to babysit a month out and hopefully we'll see Nope and hopefully it will be wonderful.
aphrodite_mine: two women wearing army hats steal a kiss (random - vintage love)
Allison Ponthier's second EP dropped last week and it is, if I may say so, perfect. Shaking Hands With Elvis is entwined with death, queer anxiety, and love. She keeps reaching into taste new musical flavors and I like everything SO MUCH. Plus, with the last video drop ("Hollywood Forever Cemetery") we have a whole new lovely entry into the Ponthierverse--er, apparently Ponthierland is the proper term, I shall need to update AO3--Hat Girl, Dog Elvis, and the beautiful creature that Hat Girl becomes. I think this whole EP is about becoming that beautiful creature.

Liz and I watched Fire Island last weekend and it was EXACTLY what it wanted to be and what we wanted to watch.

Tonight I made grilled salmon (just brined pre-grill and served with rice pilaf - exquisite).

Movies (11/15)
Men - Okay, while it wasn't what I thought it would be, I'm liking it supremely more upon reflecting. I'm also sticking to my original thought that I wouldn't have made that particular choice, but I don't think it is as terrible as I initially felt. The ending, I mean. I always liked the first 3/4.

Pieces of Nonfiction for Work (4/12)
Wrote a little blog about OCR, which was relatively painless.

Recipes (12/12)
Shrimp pasta primavera was fine. Earthy as heck.

Two tracks to leave you with.

1) My Kink is Karma - Chappell Roan (the video is delightful and features femdom and burlesque)

It's hot when you're going through hell
And you're hating yourself, I'm feeling myself
It's hot when you know that you're caught
And you're getting pissed off, it's getting me off

2) how are you not freaking out? - Greta Issac (video is several random clips, not official)

she's got everything she needs, what a loser

TV Seasons (8*/10)

American Song Contest, season 1. Watched every episode whereas with Eurovision we only watched the Grand Final. I think I like having the additional context of more exposure to the songs, but whew, the quality is just not there guys. I mean, the finale was pretty solid? But starting with 56(?) acts was ROUGH. Still hoping for a season 2 that figures itself out a little more.

Star Wars: Clone Wars, season 1. We're into season 2 now and it is SO much better, aside from Padme and Anakin who are both still not good, but it just shows how on the rudimentary side season 1 is. Everything wrong with the prequels is still wrong here - WHY IS PADME DATING THIS ASSHOLE? Why is the Jedi Counsel SO POOPY? Why didn't X Jedi use their powers in X scene? Because of plot, that's why.

Our Flag Means Death, season 1.* Asterisk because technically it makes 9, but I'm not counting rewatches separately. Still enjoyed most of it. Still have zero desire to do anything fannish with it. Jim and Edward and John and Olu and Jackie and Frenchie are all very pretty.

*

Tomorrow we're going to see MEN (movie). Having our donor babysit feels like cheating at childcare. I have read negative reviews and mediocre reviews and, I'm sorry, it still just sounds like precisely my shit.

Also tomorrow I'm making a proper following-the-recipe version of Shrimp Pasta Primavera and I have been fantasizing about sauteing asparagus. I usually make it without tomato, so I am Far Too Excited to try it with.

New Recipes (11/12)
Tried a new marinade for grilling chicken. Was dubious because it had a LOT of ingredients I wouldn't have selected otherwise and occasionally strongly dislike, but it turned out so good. The MOST umami. All over age 6/the half of the house not currently down with strep/possibly also Hand Foot and Mouth enjoyed it. I like grilling a lot. I also made some very simple yellow squash (olive oil, salt), but didn't get to eat it til it was cold.

TV Seasons (6/10)
Finished Call the Midwife season 1. Not very fond of Jenny most of the time, but enjoying the show. Did NOT expect the "incest is okay, actually, in some circumstances" plotline.

The Wilds season 2 dropped. Y'all, now there is a group of stranded boys. They're so ridiculous. I don't hate them/this direction, which is good because I was expecting to! The dialogue remains Not Great. "We were just becoming men. But... some of us? Were becoming monsters." AMAZING.

Puzzles (2/8) - No progress
Y'all, the puzzle table was moved as part of the great office shift of 2022, and we tired really hard but it just sucks to do puzzles in the middle of the office. Storing the puzzle library in my office for the time being because we don't give up easy, but... I don't see the puzzle magic reigniting.

Liz is doing the Dracula substack along with most(?) of Tumblr and I get such great updates when I get home. "BABE. HE HAS A MUSTACHE." (Twist: THE MUSTACHE IS FAKE????)
aphrodite_mine: (the nevers - war wives)
A few goal tracking updates:

TV Seasons (5/10): We wrapped on Abbott Elementary season 1. Love love love these babies. Gregory, Jacob and Zach are all autistic, right? Also, unrelated to that question, apparently what I love most about Britta, Ann, and Pam is that they are the straight man in love with a very enthusiastic protagonist. SO wild to have that flipped to a man. **GREGORY** Abbott also helped me identify a trope I HATE which was also recently featured on OFMD, where a previous connection (member of out group) is brought in to the in group and they proceed to bull in a china shop social norms. It gives me absolute HIVES.

New Recipes (10/12): Y'all I'm a cooking machine. Cheesy Tomato Shrimp Pasta was super easy because both sauces (mixed together, DOUBLE SAUCE) were 90% from cans. I chose to use cascatelli as the pasta because they look like octopus legs!

I'm enjoying exploring [community profile] bethefirst. My piece is I was never that kind (female!Alien/female!Cowboy, from Allison Ponthier's Cowboy music video)

Hi to new people from the friending meme!

Movies (10/15)
For Liz & J's birthdays we went to Drinkolas Cage, where a bar puts on a random Nick Cage movie and there is a drinking game. The movie was Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance. It was bad, but it was a great time!

TV Seasons (4/10)
Finished Sort Of, which I haven't seen make the cultural splash I think it is really due. It is so deeply queer, and made me cry in agender. This is SUCH a rich text, and so funny and sad and stressful and beautiful and sexy and all of the things! Sabi, the main character is a nonbinary child of immigrants currently working as a nanny and exploring gender presentation. Their world is thrown for a loop when the mother of the family they nanny for (and their good friend) falls into a coma.

Pieces of Fiction (6/5)
I wasn't planning to, but managed a short piece for [community profile] bethefirst under the wire.

I just searched the Abbott Elementary fics on AO3, and... the main ship is Barbara/Melissa????? How did my brain TOTALLY miss this? My femslash muscles are damn rusty, apparently.
