Movies:
- Saint Maud dir. Rose Glass. I won't soon forget the final sequence. There's so much here for a debut feature and it was incredible to see that grow and bloom in Love Lies Bleeding. It doesn't quite congeal here for me, but serves as an incredible artifact of a debut feature.
- Love Lies Bleeding dir. Rose Glass. A really transcendent theater experience about consuming desire. Marvelous.
- The Platform dir. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. Didn't work for me. Quite hammer-headed with messaging, but you know that going in and keep wondering if it will be worth the allegory, and, spoiler, no, not really.
- Lisa Frankenstein dir. Zelda Williams. Another promising debut! I'm not sure if my issue here is with Williams, Diablo Cody's script, or industry cuts, as I feel like so much is missing or misses the mark. Really wish I could have enjoyed this more, as people who do had so much fun!

TV Seasons:
- Star Wars: Clone Wars, s6. Definitely sloggier after [redacted] leaves. Odd that as someone who loved The Courtship of Princess Leia and the witches of Dathomir so much in the books REALLY doesn't jive with the magic/mysticism of the Force episodes. We're going to plow through s7 and then switch over to X-Men in prep for X-Men '97. I never watched the original! IMAGINE!
- Call the Midwife, s3. IMO a rougher season. Struggled to connect with Jenny more than usual, and the episode at the asylum was pure horror.

Albums:
- Lizzy McAlpine, Older. Significant growth from her debut! This album hit me in a lot of emotions, complicated by my OCD because I misheard "I want you to hate me" as "I want you to rape me" and had a big spiral in Wal-Mart. The comparison to Phoebe Bridgers is strong. I especially like the juxtaposition between McAlpine's "I wish I knew what the end is" and Bridgers' "I Know the End [screaming]." They feel like two facets of the same depression/abusive relationship rut.
- Bad Bad Hats, Bad Bad Hats. A nice listen. Low investment. Nothing stunning.

Recipes:
- Candied bacon, egg and cheese croissants with garlic Parmesan butter. E and F helped me cook! SO GOOD, especially the juxtaposition of the sweet bacon with the savory butter bread.

I've had a bit of a tough time determining that I have anything to say lately, I've been trying to keep my head down and live, basically. As this is a public post, I'll keep the personal out of it and focus on some media.

Books
I've started reading the 20th anniversary version of Heir to the Empire, inspired by Delusions of Grandeur podcast. As represented there, it holds up well, and reading the author's commentary is really engaging, especially regarding what Zahn was and wasn't allowed to do. It is slow going because I'm out of practice for fiction, but enjoyable.

Movies
Finally (after over a year of obsessing over it) rented We're All Going to the World's Fair from the library. Not sure I would have gotten the trans dialogue without reading interviews and commentary, but the movie is richer with it. Even without it, what a FEAST. The lead actress (on screen for almost the entire runtime) is beyond incredible. It as so much to say about the experience of coming of age online, and while I was never a YouTube person, I felt myself acutely represented. It is also very much a first narrative feature, but I'm incredibly hopeful that Shoenbrun's next film works out some of the kinks. I'm absolutely ready to make I Saw the TV Glow my entire personality in a way that I haven't felt about media in awhile.

After browsing a few services I also followed a whim to watch The Nightingale (The Babadook director's sophomore feature) despite previously deciding that I wouldn't do so. It turns out that past me was by far the wiser. The film is exponentially worse than I had expected, even with fast forwarding through the three (THREE) prolonged rape scenes. There's a narrative racism that I don't think Kent even has any idea that she's perpetrating that really made me sick. DNF, but read up on the ending, and it goes exactly where it telegraphs it is going to. Is there some art here? Maybe? But it feels so much rougher than The Babadook, and makes clear that the psychological broad strokes there are more or less endemic to Kent's filmmaking.

Television
Our Flag Means Death season 2 was ultimately so disappointing. Ashoka wasn't very good. But Deadloch, DEADLOCH was excellent. I'll take it.

Podcasts
I'm very much mourning the end of "Baby Geniuses," but have found a few nice shows to pad out my listening profile, including "A Colossal Waste of Time," a Homestuck recap podcast from a 2024 perspective, "The Popcast" with Knox and Jamie, and "Text Me Back!" with Lindy West and Meagan Hatcher-Mays.

--

It has been a nice uplift to make plans. So far, I've secured a babysitter (and tickets, mostly) for Love Lies Bleeding opening weekend, I Saw the TV Glow opening night, Chappell Roan's solo tour stop in St. Louis, and a family trip to Table Rock Lake.
aphrodite_mine: (annihilation - in the thick of it)
Finally mostly recovered from the latest illness blast (COVID + strep + influenza B after Christmas) and I think I have my 2024 goals finalized.
  • 16 movies, at least half that I rate 3 stars or higher, same count as last year
  • 10 TV seasons, up from last year
  • 2 Actual Play miniseries, new category. These took up spots on both movies and TV last year, so technically both are increased in that way as well!
  • 16 full-album listens, up from last year, but lower than I actually achieved last year, since EPs count
  • 5 books, same as last year
  • 12 new-to-me recipes, same as last year, but lower than I actually achieved
  • 5 pieces written, at least 100 words each. I originally removed all writing goals in sheer despair, but just today added this one back. I think I have to be hopeful that at some point in the year, I will have enough mental bandwidth to try again
Progress so far:
Movies - Saltburn, which I most certainly did NOT rate 3 stars or higher. I don't know, man.
TV Shows - None finished, but making good progress with Ahsoka, Deadloch, Our Flag Means Death S2, and if I can figure out a HBO Max login (had to cancel ours), I think I'll eat True Detective: Night Country right up.
Albums - Rosie Tucker, Tiny Songs Volume 1, which is lovely, and Hannah Cole's 2-year-old EP Cradle, which earned 4/4 songs on my liked list. I also gave Juliana Madrid the old college try because I LOVE her song "Let the Light In" but wow, it was actually somehow terrible?
Recipes - Ham, Egg, and Cheese Croissant Bake, which is like if french toast was savory and also WAY too squishy? I got through a bowl and a half but this one isn't a repeat

Maybe this year I'll also manage to get on Dreamwidth more than once a month!

Movies:

7. Evil Dead Rise (I was not as prepped as I could have been for the tonal spread of this one)
8. Joan is Awful (yes, I count Black Mirror episodes as movies)
9. Oppenheimer (technically interesting, but god-awful writing and very Nolan treatment of women)
10. Barbie (I refuse to engage with this on any level than surface, because I want to remain enjoying it)
... 11. Talk to Me (will be seeing on Sunday, universe willing!)

Television Seasons:

4. Party Down, season 3 (enjoyable)
5. Call the Midwife, season 2

Album Listens:

12. Barbie: The Album (several bops, but such spoilers! I listened before watching ((WHY)) and kind of messed up)
... I also tried Claud's latest Supermodel but felt so meh about it that I couldn't give myself to log it

New Recipes:

I've done several but the only one I remembered soon enough to log it properly was today's
10. Brown Sugar Glaze Salmon (doubled the brown sugar, halved the dijon mustard, yum)

(for the public feed: got my COVID dx after 3 years on Monday)
(for all: am now COVID free, apparently!)

Started watching Severance and it is wonderful and weird and interesting so far. We had big plans to watch on my sick mornings, but then G was positive too and we had crabby twins and it was easier to just sleep.

Also started rewatching Party Down (first watch for Liz!) to prep for season 3 and dear GOD I am still so obsessed with Casey/Henry. Lizzy Caplan is just so extremely GOOD. And now I want to rewatch Masters of Sex but I don't actually want to do that, I am pretty sure.

*

Movies (4/16): Trolls (2016). After catching snippets over the last month, I finally caught the full movie twice last week. It is the twins current favorite movie and stops meltdowns, so it is on often. I gave it a 3 on Letterboxed, but now I'm wondering if I need to revoke that, because there are a lot of really... gross things happening? There's also a lot that's cute and fun and by GOD they love the music (G sings along, y'all!) but the antisemitism is real nasty and all of the voice cast but Anna Kendrick and Ron Funches I'm like "but why." Anyway.

*

My mind apparently needs about 15 hours of sleep per day to get real creative anymore, but I have a free book/movie idea for anyone with the writing stamina for anything longer than 1,000 words (that's pushing it for me lately). Stars are Rebecca Hall (Laura "Lou"), Emma Corrin (Coral), Bryan Tyree Henry (still kicking around name), and Rahul Kohli (Rafael). I want to talk about them a lot, but know I can't do a damn thing with 'em. They're (eventually) a foursome!

I'm now perpetually offline, it seems, but I have a few updates. Mostly on my goals for the year! Everything else is work or home and more or less smooth. That's a good thing. Here's my status so far.

  1. Watch 16 movies

    1. Encanto: Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Some odd directoral choices were made here, and some key cast members were missing and were felt. That said, Stephanie Beatriz is delightful and I didn't hate spending an hour on this. We fast-forwarded the bit with Lin-Manuel and the children's choir.

    2. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Realized belatedly that I hadn't watched it at ALL last year, so it was an easy remedy. Was nice to watch with someone new as well. What a joy to see enjoyment of my favorite from someone I care about.

    3. I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Absolutely loved this but for the last 15 minutes or so. This is my first Kaufman-directed film, so I'm not sure if it is a choice that is worth excusing, or more of a case where more restraint should have been added. Jessie Buckley is just magnificent.

  2. Complete 11 TV seasons

    1. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, season 5. Kicked up the notch on drama with a mostly cohesive/chronological story that I enjoyed quite a bit. Also de-centered Anakin - amazing how that works out.

  3. Dedicated, album-order listen to 11 albums

    1. Beabadoobee, Beatopia. I like quite a lot of these songs, but it was frustrating to listen to the album only AFTER hearing all of the ones I like separately. Not a disappointing album, just a disappointing process of discovery.

    2. SZA, CTRL. Need to give this another go, considering how much I like SOS. There is quite a lot of inter-song dialogue which is a big negative for me.

    3. Sam Smith, Gloria. Not a Sam Smith fan as it were, but the outrage over their latest video made me curious/want to give them some streams. This is another I'd actually like to spend some more time with, as I think there is an interesting narrative going on with the holiness (despite "Unholy") of queer identity. Also "I'm Not Here to Make Friends" is a bop.

    4. Julien Baker, Little Oblivions. With new boygenius on the horizon, I wanted to give Julien's solo work another good chance. While I love her leads on boygenius, I am just not feeling this.

  4. Read 5 books. LMAO GUYS. We'll see.

  5. Complete 5 pieces of fiction

    1. Simple, Pam/Karen, The Office. A bit of a cheat since I had most of this written in a draft, just really honed it down into a double drabble. I think I'm happy with this.

    2. Your nightdress on the floor, Olive/Elizabeth/Bill, Professor Marston. This isn't quite what I want it to be, but it scratched an itch while I continue poking at a few other ideas for them.

  6. Share 8 impactful podcasts or episodes

    1. Dead Eyes, season 1. Finally wrapped this season. I've heard that season 2 finally realizes the full premise of the show, and while I find the industry information fun, I'm not sure I can abide such intense naval gazing for another season.

  7. Try 12 new-to-me recipes

    1. Mushroom Carbonara (with 2nd variation with bacon and peas). Less bacon is absolutely essential. Peas were a nice ad. Good creamy sauce.

    2. Sushi bake cups. The second-best type of recipe where we all loved it but came away with a lot of ideas for how to make it better next time. I want to try a full pan bake rather than cups.

  8. Deep clean of the back room. Progress is VERY good. It is unlocking the need to do a deep clean of all closets in the house as things need to migrate around to new homes.

2022 GOALS
1. Complete 8 puzzles. Not completed. Promotion plus office shuffle-ups meant no more puzzle table OR time to puzzle.
2. Complete 5 craft projects. Not completed, though I may have graded myself more harshly in what "counts."
3. Watch 15 movies. With two last minute entries (Strange World and Glass Onion) I made 18/15. Most movies watched this year were a solid C+ so that's something that needs to be amended.
4. Complete 10 TV seasons. 15 seasons completed. I haven't yet posted about She-Hulk (which I enjoyed) and Clone Wars s4 (which I mostly enjoyed).
5. Dedicated, album-order listen to 10 albums. I wrapped up the year with sza's SOS making 15 albums.
6. Read 10 books. Not completed. I got through 4.
7. Complete 5 pieces of fiction. I did 6! Most were really short, though.
8. Complete 12 pieces of nonfiction for work. Far past 12. I stopped counting.
9. Share 10 impactful podcasts or episodes. I did 9. Not bad!
10. Work on 5 sales that result in a signed contract. Again, stopped counting and far surpassed.
11. Try 12 brand new recipes. Ended the year on 20 with a chicken, spinach, orzo skillet (mixed reviews).
12. [Unnoted goal] Attend X live shows. I attended 2.
13. Spend less time on social media. Deleted Facebook from my phone and dropped usage down to maybe 15 minutes every two weeks. Instagram and Reddit usage went up, however. Twitter stayed zero. Mixed results.
14. Spend less time on phone. Shrug?
15. Grow leadership skills and agility. Nothing conscious, but this definitely developed over 2022.
16. Guide kids through school and therapy. I did a bang up job here. Pretty solid.

2023 Goals
1. Watch 16 movies, with a majority being movies I enjoyed (at least 9 movies at 3.5 stars or higher)
2. Complete 11 TV seasons.
3. Dedicated, album-order listen to 11 albums
4. Read 5 books.
5. Complete 5 pieces of fiction
6. Share 8 impactful podcasts or episodes
7. Try 12 new-to-me recipes
8. Attend 2 live shows
9. DEEP clean of the back room to the result of an ACTUALLY USABLE SPACE.

No longer tracking work goals, or phone goals with the understanding that those will remain more or less on track.

Men - Okay, while it wasn't what I thought it would be, I'm liking it supremely more upon reflecting. I'm also sticking to my original thought that I wouldn't have made that particular choice, but I don't think it is as terrible as I initially felt. The ending, I mean. I always liked the first 3/4.

Pieces of Nonfiction for Work (4/12)
Wrote a little blog about OCR, which was relatively painless.

Recipes (12/12)
Shrimp pasta primavera was fine. Earthy as heck.

Two tracks to leave you with.

1) My Kink is Karma - Chappell Roan (the video is delightful and features femdom and burlesque)

It's hot when you're going through hell
And you're hating yourself, I'm feeling myself
It's hot when you know that you're caught
And you're getting pissed off, it's getting me off

2) how are you not freaking out? - Greta Issac (video is several random clips, not official)

god bless the version of me

she drinks wine and watches tv
she's got everything she needs, what a loser

TV Seasons (8*/10)

American Song Contest, season 1. Watched every episode whereas with Eurovision we only watched the Grand Final. I think I like having the additional context of more exposure to the songs, but whew, the quality is just not there guys. I mean, the finale was pretty solid? But starting with 56(?) acts was ROUGH. Still hoping for a season 2 that figures itself out a little more.

Star Wars: Clone Wars, season 1. We're into season 2 now and it is SO much better, aside from Padme and Anakin who are both still not good, but it just shows how on the rudimentary side season 1 is. Everything wrong with the prequels is still wrong here - WHY IS PADME DATING THIS ASSHOLE? Why is the Jedi Counsel SO POOPY? Why didn't X Jedi use their powers in X scene? Because of plot, that's why.

Our Flag Means Death, season 1.* Asterisk because technically it makes 9, but I'm not counting rewatches separately. Still enjoyed most of it. Still have zero desire to do anything fannish with it. Jim and Edward and John and Olu and Jackie and Frenchie are all very pretty.

Tomorrow we're going to see MEN (movie). Having our donor babysit feels like cheating at childcare. I have read negative reviews and mediocre reviews and, I'm sorry, it still just sounds like precisely my shit.

Also tomorrow I'm making a proper following-the-recipe version of Shrimp Pasta Primavera and I have been fantasizing about sauteing asparagus. I usually make it without tomato, so I am Far Too Excited to try it with.

New Recipes (11/12)
Tried a new marinade for grilling chicken. Was dubious because it had a LOT of ingredients I wouldn't have selected otherwise and occasionally strongly dislike, but it turned out so good. The MOST umami. All over age 6/the half of the house not currently down with strep/possibly also Hand Foot and Mouth enjoyed it. I like grilling a lot. I also made some very simple yellow squash (olive oil, salt), but didn't get to eat it til it was cold.

TV Seasons (6/10)
Finished Call the Midwife season 1. Not very fond of Jenny most of the time, but enjoying the show. Did NOT expect the "incest is okay, actually, in some circumstances" plotline.

The Wilds season 2 dropped. Y'all, now there is a group of stranded boys. They're so ridiculous. I don't hate them/this direction, which is good because I was expecting to! The dialogue remains Not Great. "We were just becoming men. But... some of us? Were becoming monsters." AMAZING.

Puzzles (2/8) - No progress
Y'all, the puzzle table was moved as part of the great office shift of 2022, and we tired really hard but it just sucks to do puzzles in the middle of the office. Storing the puzzle library in my office for the time being because we don't give up easy, but... I don't see the puzzle magic reigniting.

Liz is doing the Dracula substack along with most(?) of Tumblr and I get such great updates when I get home. "BABE. HE HAS A MUSTACHE." (Twist: THE MUSTACHE IS FAKE????)
aphrodite_mine: (the nevers - war wives)
A few goal tracking updates:

TV Seasons (5/10): We wrapped on Abbott Elementary season 1. Love love love these babies. Gregory, Jacob and Zach are all autistic, right? Also, unrelated to that question, apparently what I love most about Britta, Ann, and Pam is that they are the straight man in love with a very enthusiastic protagonist. SO wild to have that flipped to a man. **GREGORY** Abbott also helped me identify a trope I HATE which was also recently featured on OFMD, where a previous connection (member of out group) is brought in to the in group and they proceed to bull in a china shop social norms. It gives me absolute HIVES.

New Recipes (10/12): Y'all I'm a cooking machine. Cheesy Tomato Shrimp Pasta was super easy because both sauces (mixed together, DOUBLE SAUCE) were 90% from cans. I chose to use cascatelli as the pasta because they look like octopus legs!

I'm enjoying exploring [community profile] bethefirst. My piece is I was never that kind (female!Alien/female!Cowboy, from Allison Ponthier's Cowboy music video)

Hi to new people from the friending meme!

Movies (10/15)
For Liz & J's birthdays we went to Drinkolas Cage, where a bar puts on a random Nick Cage movie and there is a drinking game. The movie was Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance. It was bad, but it was a great time!

TV Seasons (4/10)
Finished Sort Of, which I haven't seen make the cultural splash I think it is really due. It is so deeply queer, and made me cry in agender. This is SUCH a rich text, and so funny and sad and stressful and beautiful and sexy and all of the things! Sabi, the main character is a nonbinary child of immigrants currently working as a nanny and exploring gender presentation. Their world is thrown for a loop when the mother of the family they nanny for (and their good friend) falls into a coma.

Pieces of Fiction (6/5)
I wasn't planning to, but managed a short piece for [community profile] bethefirst under the wire.

I just searched the Abbott Elementary fics on AO3, and... the main ship is Barbara/Melissa????? How did my brain TOTALLY miss this? My femslash muscles are damn rusty, apparently.

The Night House. Knew it starred Rebecca Hall early on but then forgot and suggested it for our movie night blind. What a nice surprise! She does grief SO well. The architecture of this, and empty-house-in-empty-woods horror generally worked well for me, and I wanted to like the narrative shifts more than I did. I suppose the movie I ultimately wanted would have been a very different film. The end is a bit bonkers, but didn't lose me. Just didn't really grab me either.

Podcasts Worth Sharing (5/10)
This Is Love, episode "Seeing and Being Seen" (linked) beautiful love story featuring one of my favorite romantic things - the desire to capture and recapture a lover in art. Had an RP where we touched on this briefly, but the root for me really is "Transatlantacism" the Skins fic by sivi from oh, 15 years ago. Do I still have my book-printed copy? Maybe I mailed it to a friend. Effy as a lovestricken photographer just works, and this trope is seared into my heart.

New Recipes (9/12)
Not a full recipe here, since the pasta was all store bought and frozen, but I've made things that required less work that counted, so I'm counting it! Garlic Butter Sauce for Tortellini. My first time making a sauce with corn starch! I think it mostly worked, even though I misread the directions and combined two steps. No one has died.

I don't know if I've mentioned it here, but I LOVE limited edition flavors. Mountain Dew and sodas are the worst offenders that I can't resist. Oreos are a 50-50 shot if I want to try, baking mixes and cereals don't tempt me. But SODA. The new Flamin' Hot Mountain Dew surprised me in the store today and reviews are SO mixed that I had to try. Do you care about soda reviews? Probably not! But: more straight lime cirtrus and apparently the level of heat fluctuates between cans because we have had two so far in otherwise identical conditions where one was MUCH more tingly. It is good.

New Recipes (8/12)
Grilled chicken and veggie kabobs, on the grill! Everything marinated in this wonderful soy/honey/garlic mixture that was just *mwah.* May consider cooking veg and chicken separately next time to soften the veg a little more.

Impactful Podcast Sharing (4/10)
Finished Twin Flames this week and hoo boy did it make me feel weird. I feel like I probably shouldn't have listened to it, and it probably shouldn't have been made, but also it is important to excavate these scam artists so folks can steer clear next time, maybe? The way Angie was broken down so completely doesn't pair well with having her lay herself bare for the show's purpose. I don't know. Feels bad.

Album Listens (5/10)
If you're not afraid, then I'm not afraid by Queen of Jeans. Pleased with my decision to dive further into their music as I didn't know when starting that the two leads are queer, but I did know that they have a lovely muddled electric guitar sound and great voices. The album has a few highlights, but doesn't feel SUPER cohesive as an album-album. "Only Obvious to You" is a favorite.

Did I mention that I deleted Facebook from my phone like a month ago? I've only checked it once since then and I'm glad to be rid of it, even if I did cut a bunch of potential friendships off at the knees.
aphrodite_mine: (phoebe bridgers - prom king)
Allison Ponthier has a new song and music video out, Autopilot, introducing four new characters in the Ponthier-verse: 50s Housewife Who Loves Appliances (she marries a car), Aforementioned Sentient Car, Buff Delivery Man, and Sexy Priest - Buff Delivery Man and Sexy Priest may or may not be together. I choose to believe. Also of note, Allison wears a suit, and there are grungy guitars and -- swoon. I love how visually creative and visionary she is. And FUNNY.

Full Album Listen (3/10)
Lizzy McAlpine's five seconds flat dropped, and I'm not impressed. "Doomsday" and "Erase Me" were my favorite singles and they're by far the album standouts, IMO. There's some interesting personal stuff, but not really interesting listening material.

We started rewatching Our Flag Means Death with J without finishing it ourselves. I imagine we'll finish this weekend, and then I can do some deep soul work and figure out if I'm gonna write m/m (joking -- about deep soul work, not writing m/m. I'll probably do that).

We're going on a dinner-and-a-movie date tomorrow! It is gonna be weird!

  • Ali Wong: Don Wong - Extremely hetero/binary. I want to like Ali Wong much more than I do.

  • The Babysitter - Full of holes but I had fun. Samara Weaving is so lovely.

TV Seasons (1/10)
  • River, which I already alluded to but can now disclose. I am so sneaky. What a delight! (The show was interesting, but suffers from the idea that it wants viewers to ship Every Female with Stellan Skarsgaard.
  • Excited to attempt to binge-cry Pieces of Her this weekend.

  • Finished season 2 of Blood Ties, which concludes the series. I have a few more reservations about S2 than S1, but ultimately really liked it. The evolution of Eleonore's character is really wonderful, and I could listen to Gillian Jacobs all day long.
I won a bid for Fandom Trumps Hate and requested Luke/Leia/SURPRISE ME WITH A THIRD and am quite excited about it.

We transitioned the little ones to big kid beds this week and they are SO SMALL (the kids, that is).

I think the official tally for local snow was 7ish inches. Combined with the ice layer that hit first, I worked from home for three days. Hooooo buddy I hate it. Hilarious that I love the snowed in trope, because MY DUDES. NO. I got out tonight to pick up pizza, and it looks like weekly errands will be doable tomorrow. But, I'm also, maybe, getting sick! I've got a really sore throat.

The kids are marathoning Canadian kidshow Dino Dana, starring Michela Luci (she also voices True & the Rainbow Kingdom, and a voice from Go Dog Go - y'all we watch a lot of tv) and the house is full of roaring and squacking. It is cute. The show is also cute. The sisters call one another Seester. Is this a Canadian thing? Anyway, we're learning a lot about dinosaurs.

Goal progress of note:
- Fic 2 is in this round of [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, hopefully going live this weekend. If you don't already know what I wrote and want to figure it out, I'll write you a prize.
- New meal of bell pepper quesadillas with mango salsa was an unexpected JAM. I kind of love all the different kinds of crema and sauces these meal kits have me do. This one was hot sauce/sour cream and so simple but I would never ever on my own.
- Mitski's new release Laurel Hell was my first full album listen of the year. The singles gave a pretty good preview, and FWIW I think they are the best tracks. Bright Eyes is apparently re-releasing new versions of a bunch of old releases, including Fevers and Mirrors. Phoebe Bridgers is on a lot of the tracks, including "Halaigh...", which was released as a flashback-inducing single. The whole album is like... senior year of high school for me, so revisiting it now is going to be... something.
- No full seasons to report yet, but tonight we started Archive 81 (digitization as a plotpoint! Decently spoopy!) and Murderville (so stupid... soooo stupid, but fun)
aphrodite_mine: (pepe king prawn - cool dude)
A few goal progress notes

1. My first movie of the year, The Neon Demon, has (one of) the same problems as my final tv season of last year (The Great, season 2): Elle Fanning. I think she may just... not be a good actress. But also, (and I'm open to persuasion here, my ranking has been fluctuating) I think Neon Demon is also just garbage masquerading as art. Hot take for, oh, six years ago. Also: did I know going in that Jena Malone [spoilers] a [spoiler]? Because YIKES double yikes all of the yikes. (May be spoilers in the comments.)

2. Second movie of the year was Encanto. I have a lot of feelings and thoughts but others are expressing them better, so I'll just stick with Mirabel and Luisa are both super gay. Abuela can eat my shorts.

3. Two sales contracts were signed today, one of which meets our initial sales goal for the first six months of the year.

4. Our January Every Plate box took care of my first three new-to-me recipes, and they were all winners with at least half the household. (E shouldn't count. E just hates dinner in general.)

- Linguine carbonara
- Mashed potatoes with meatballs and green beans
- Veggie pot pie (planning to do this one again and introduce new ingredients each time)

1. I'm watching [redacted] for a story, and really liking it! I really, really enjoy writing things for fandoms I've not previously seen, and I'm wondering just how absolutely nuts it would be to do a sign up with ONLY offers for things that I'd like to watch but hadn't.

2. Hello to new folk from the circle meme and snowflake! I thought I had a good handle on participating, but - looks at calendar - it only took a few days to totally lose my footing. I did write today, though!

3. Third book of the year in progress is I'll Be Gone In the Dark and holy bonanza is McNamarra's prose stunning. I've a bunch of fiction in my Libby queue - turns out I don't hate reading on my phone - but nothing was moving so I figured I'd run down items that have been on my to-read list for ages. (Don't tell my bookshelves, I can't handle them, too intimidating. Someday.)

4. On that, I think I've dramatically under-enumerated several of my goals for the year. Did part of me set goals low so I could blast through them? Probably. Teacher's pet.

5. My Chromebook turns into a tablet, and I got a stylus, and turns out I still enjoy drawing! I drew Bella Heathcote (and it looks mostly like her, unlike my portrait of Zero our cat, which Liz said looked like... not a cat)
