So, what's on my plate now...

I'm 26. That's something. I made it this far.
[livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon is wrapping up pretty nicely. Knock on wood.
My calendar opens to two weeks at once, so that means I can now SEE the wedding.
I'm writing a review of Alexandre Aja's films for Bitch Flicks.
Yuletide fandom selection and signups are... soon?
I'm also totally going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] apocabigbang, because I just got a kick ass idea. Ladies with guns.

Quick poll... for those of you who have seen The Hills Have Eyes, P2 and/or High Tension... do you see elements in feminism or women positivity in the films?

And here's my wishlist if you want to make me something. Idk.

Hills Have Eyes, no, but I don't see the opposite, either, I just think the characters are thinly drawn because they're not important to the story. (I'm talking about the remake here; I barely remember the original. But I can't imagine it was much different in terms of character nuance.)

Hmm. The women do have particularly gendered violence committed against them, the older sister with references to lactating breasts, emilie deravin, obviously... While the men die/fight because they are people. Would you say?

Yes, but I think that has to do with the fact that the villains are mutated inbred rednecks, not any sort of social commentary. (I remain surprised that that one guy didn't get assraped, though. I really thought they were setting up for that when the one mutant started petting him.)

The Hills Have Eyes, P2 and/or High Tension

None of them have any feminism or women positivity in them, Imho. Least of all High Tension.

I am also signing up for [livejournal.com profile] apocabigbang! What is your ~idea?

I had noooooooo idea that "The Hills Have Eyes" and the masterpiece of modern horror that is P2 were by the same person. ;)

I...admit that the only thing I remember about the former is that Emilie de Ravin's character was raped and I was ragey.

Generally, I don't find the slasher/creature type horror as feminist as the more supernaturally themed gothic horror, but I think P2 is very awesome with its "Girl Saves Self" thing. It sort of felt like an episode of "The Inside." Actually, thematically speaking, I do think that the ideas and the setting it's dealing with is closer to gothic themes? Yeah, we don't have any women/women relationships as those usually do, but everything else? Kind of, yeah.

Oh, I'm not really proposing that any of the films are feminist, but I wanted to highlight any feminist moments or ideas the films might lean to. :)

I know. :) Really, even with Gothic horror,I don't think it's so much that it's meant to be feminist as much as that it's following genre conventions, which were conceived in a feminist context. And horror as a genre, in general, owes a lot to women's writings in Romantic period, so even if they're not meant, feminist themes are likely to pop up randomly. Also, this is why I get overly annoyed with horror that feels misogynistic, because there's just no excuse when you're borrowing from a women-positive tradition. /wordy.
