I feel like getting things off my chest. Name a fandom, and I'll give you my ~unpopular fandom opinion~ (or three).

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Are we talking any fandom here? I'll just give you a few options.

Glee
Firefly
Gossip Girl
Battlestar Galactica

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh nice!

Glee
Unpopular opinion 1: It looks cute, but I'm not flailing over it.
Unpopular opinion 2: Unless there's lots of gay action with the stuttering girl, I'll probably stop watching.

Firefly
Unpopular opinion 1: I HATE JOSS WHEDON.

Gossip Girl
Unpopular opinion 1: I think Blake Lively is ugly!
Unpopular opinion 2: I've never watched the show/read the books, and I don't want to.

Battlestar Galactica
Unpopular opinion 1: Again, I've never watched the show (either incarnation), and I have no desire to. BSG is NOT the height of sci-fi entertainment, and it never will be.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
O_O

It was probably not smart to ask about your unpopular opinions for some of my favorite shows... yeah, bad idea.

We, um, seem to disagree about EVERYTHING! And dude, why the Whedon hate? (Seriously, I'm interested.)

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
*starts twitching uncontrollably*

I wish there was like, an easy blog to link you to. I mean, there might be? There should be - all the reasons why feminists hate Joss Whedon. Mostly, because he claims to be one while really really not being such.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... yeah, you don't have to worry about that. I've read plenty of critiques... mostly because I've written several papers about the Whedon-verse... I, should, um... maybe we should just agree to never talk about Whedon ever, because we are clearly not going to agree here and I really like being mutual friends on the LJ... further, it all depends on how you qualify feminism in determining whether he is one or at least upholds some of the tenants of feminism. I understand the critique that's often presented in this arena, but there are several fundamental issues with some point (not all) commonly discussed... yeah, this can go nowhere good.

Oh, I also meant to talk to you about this comm. I wanted your help with. It's something fairly different and cool in my opinion, and I think you'd like it. I'll PM you about it. : )

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not talking about it is a REALLY good idea.

Sounds good. Hit me up, bb.

[identity profile] distractedone.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
You are not truly feminist if you don't like Joss Whedon. He basically redefined feminism as a whole, and he is one of the biggest feminists ever. He has done so much for women's culture by adding such strong female characters like Buffy and Echo from Dollhouse.

Echo will one day get over her parent programming and become the true feminist she deserves to be! You just need to watch it for two more seasons or until it gets canceled! She'll come around!

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
...

Oh jeez. I wouldn't exactly go that far, though I think there's a decent case to be made that Whedon did a lot for fictional female characters in American and British popular media, but to say he's done "so much for women's culture" might be a but be a bit of a lofty statement to support. And this is coming from someone who own nearly all of Whedon's major works (including Toy Story, which he wrote the screenplay for).

And ummm... one of the biggest feminists ever? I'd say he's one of the most notable/noticed of third wave feminism, but that's another statement that a little... out there?

(Granted this is my opinion, but it is heavily influenced by some of the larger, collective academic opinions concerning Whedon.)

[identity profile] distractedone.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
..Oops! Sorry, I was just joking around. Heh. ;)

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... well now I feel slow. Sarcasm/joking is occasionally difficult to read on the interwebz. I was actually a little concerned oddly, but I tried to be as delicate about it as possible. Lol, major fail on my part. : P

(Kind of glad you don't see Whedon as the ultimate feminist though. Relieved really!)

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
NO MORE WHEDON TALK ON MY LJ.

WHEDON-FREE ZONE.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, sorry. My bad! Want to talk about real feminists? I'm down for a good convo about Angela Davis or Judith Butler... perhaps some Foucault?

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm good, thanks.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
GOD SUCH DRAMA ON MY LJ.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And wow, I realize that I might have come off like I don't like Firefly? But really - its one of my favorite shows.

[identity profile] xthe-ingenue.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's complain about Skins, bb! There's so much to complain about.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU.

1: DNW Naomi/Emily
2: DNW Cassie
3: I actually like Freddie.
4: I think Emily Fitch is a MARY SUE.
5: I don't ship anyone other than Tony/Effy in series 1 & 2. (Well, maybe Chris/Jal a little...)
6: Meg Prescott > Kat Prescott

There's probably more, but... I should probably quit while I still have friends.

[identity profile] xthe-ingenue.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
hahaha I agree with all of these, actually! Let me add to #2... DNW SID/CASSIE, EITHER. I think Hannah Murray said it best when she said they were not in love.

also: naomi/emily is boring and naomi is too fierce to be stuck in that boring storyline again. I hope they break up. I have no issues with Freddie. He's actually quite a nice boy. I just hate ~freffy~ cause it MAKES NO SENSE and cook/effy is much more epic. i think s4 should end in freddie/katie and cook/effy. that makes sense. emily's cute but not this most amazing or deep character. idgi. TONY/EFFY IS SUPREME OTP. i love michelle but idk how anyone can ship tony/michelle after watching it because obviously tony is only into his sister. and himself. and meg prescott got so little screen time and they made her character so one dimensional that i feel bad for her. she might as well have not even been there at all. i hope she gets more to do so i don't hate katie anymore!

also sid/michelle was cute and i wish they didn't cop out on that like they did. lame.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I ~could~ get into Sid/Michelle, because I have a major thing for substitution, and um, helloooooo. I just don't think they did a good job with it.

As for Freddie/Katie? Um, sorry. Same rule applies. Katie and Naomi are both too awesome to be with these people. (And yes, Cook/Effy ftw.)

EMILY IS A FUCKING RETARD. alskdhf;alskhdf;sdlkfh. THERE.

[identity profile] xthe-ingenue.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
lol don't worry, i don't like passionately ship freddie/katie or anything. it just made more sense than freddie/effy ever will. honestly, in a ~perfect world~ i don't think katie should end up with any of the boys, cause she doesn't really ~jive~ with them, if you will. but they like to pair everyone off, so you know she'll end up with someone. and as long as i get my cook/effy, i'm beyond caring about anyone else lol (because tony/effy is a dream that will never come true)

and the only time i liked emily was when she was with jj and thomas. idk why i'm so pumped for s4 when i have so many gripes with it lol

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, its true, they do pair ppl off... And. ugh. IDK. I just want anarchy.

[identity profile] xthe-ingenue.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
EVERYONE HAVING SEX WITH EVERYONE.

and cook/effy. with tony/effy on the side. or vice versa. idk.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Please.

Now.

(Yesterday.)

[identity profile] xthe-ingenue.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
i figured it out. cook/effy/tony and then everyone else having sex with each other.

PERFECT.

[identity profile] igohard.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
EMILY IS A FUCKING RETARD.

Please elaborate. I'm just curious, really.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally in the minority here, but stalking DOES NOT EQUAL LOVE. (Sorry, Twilight fans).

And I'm sorry to be like, un-PC, if that's what you're calling me on. I don't think Emily is literally retarded. She's intelligent, and that's why I can't get behind her acting like a complete idiot.

[identity profile] igohard.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
But it's endearing, no? In all seriousness, the character is flawed and I have to both agree and disagree on those two points.

And I wasn't calling you out, it's cool~

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Lol... aw, Emily is so not a Mary Sue!

Okay, maybe a little, but she's the best damn Mary Sue I've ever seen. And yeah, she's a bit annoying at times, but damn if she isn't horribly endearing about it. And Emily/Naomi, I want it, but I get why some people would be on shaky ground about it. I need S4 Naomi/Emily to be very different, or else I'm ready to get of the bandwagon quick. Lol, I actually made a whole post (http://queengreen.livejournal.com/21262.html) about my opinion of them a little while ago. You may or may not disagree.

I also kind of like Freddie just a little bit. He's like half my little emo friends in high school. It's great!

And no more Prescott family feuds! Can't we just ♥ them both!

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so what character trait does Emily possess other than "wanting to help people" and something that isn't revolving around Naomi or her sister?

....

EXACTLY.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think her emerging self-identity and discovery of her sexuality is a poignant story regardless of who it's attached to. And after watching and analyzing countless coming out stories on television and film, particularly that of women, I could care less if the story makes her look like Mary Sue. I think it's meaningful enough to escape some of the stigmas attached to the title.

Further, her "wanting to help people" seems to be little more complex then your typical Mary Sue behavior. Her sleeping with JJ was reckless, idiotic, and indicates that Emily does not know how to appropriately help people in a way that doesn't come at her own risk, most psychologically (ie, attempts at relationship with Naomi). JMHO though... lol, this is fun! : )

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
You're obviously able to have an academic argument without getting emotionally attached, unlike someone I know (MEEEE). Cause this is not fun for me. *grinding teeth*

I think we'll agree to disagree here, too. I was just stating an opinion, not writing meta. Maybe Emily works for you, and I won't say that she doesn't.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, fine! Ruin my fun why don't you. I do this on a fairly common basis with my friends and am on my college's debate team, so yeah, serious emotional attachment is generally not helpful in a lot of my discussions.

Agree to disagree indeed. I wasn't attempting to impose my opinions on you by the way, just trying to present some counterpoints that fuel why I disagree. Sorry for making you grind your teeth! : (

[identity profile] twistomatic.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been reading the comments and I still fail to see how Emily is a Mary Sue. If anything, EFFY is the Mary Sue, because she's so ~flawed but everyone loves her and wants to be her friend. And she's too cool for school.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I like Effy, but Jesus Christ.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, season 3 Effy is, yeah.

But that happens a lot in real life.

Sorry, I should have just said I DON'T LIKE EMILY.

[identity profile] twistomatic.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. Basically though, you're right: there are girls like Effy in real like, just like there are girls like Emily in real life. (I admit to over-emphasizing with Ems at some points, because she reminds me a lot of myself when I was in high school.)

I don't really care about the fact that you don't like Emily, really, I just don't think she qualifies as being a Mary Sue. *shrugs*

[identity profile] thegraduate09.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, Party Down and House.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Party Down
(I'm not really in touch with the 'popular' opinion of this show, as only you and one other person I know watch it...)
1. KBell isn't funny.
2. ?? There isn't too much I don't like about the show, really.

House
1. DNW House/Wilson
2. DNW Thirteen/Foreman
3. DNW Cameron/Chase
4. DNW House/Cuddy
...and now that I've demolished every 'canon' couple...
5. Amber is FREAKING AWESOME (is this unpopular?)
6. I liked season 4.

[identity profile] thegraduate09.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aww. KBell was funny in Veronica Mars.

I agree with most of your DNWs, but I DW House/Cuddy, although not the way they've been writing it.

I think most of fandom likes Amber, but I don't know for sure, because I try not to get near House fandom at all. Crazy as fuck, man.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Fandom is nutso.

...Kind of across the board.

[identity profile] curt-tone.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
oh man, i'm not gonna even mention anything other than i agree with everything you said about Skins. Except for the Freddie part. I mean, he's ok I guess, i just don't get him.

I get Cook cause you know, fucked up makes sense..freddy is just whiny.
anyway, the fact that you know my "tastes" in tv shows and love me anyway, is a fact i will always be happy about.
<3

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope they do more with Freddie instead of dropping him cause the fans hate him. He has the potential to be pretty cool.

And yes, I make exceptions for you bb. XD

[identity profile] distractedone.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
X-Men! And is there anything you don't like about Emma Frost? LOLS

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I don't really read the comics.
2. I tend not to care about Emma one way or the other. XD

[identity profile] glitterberrys.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Alias. Though I think I can guess a couple of those.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so in touch with fandom-at-large, but I'll try.

1. DNW Sydney/Vaughn.
2. I didn't hate season 5.
3. I didn't really like the show until season 3. (And then I retro-actively liked season 1 & 2).
