I feel like getting things off my chest. Name a fandom, and I'll give you my ~unpopular fandom opinion~ (or three).

Are we talking any fandom here? I'll just give you a few options.

Glee
Firefly
Gossip Girl
Battlestar Galactica

Oooh nice!

Glee
Unpopular opinion 1: It looks cute, but I'm not flailing over it.
Unpopular opinion 2: Unless there's lots of gay action with the stuttering girl, I'll probably stop watching.

Firefly
Unpopular opinion 1: I HATE JOSS WHEDON.

Gossip Girl
Unpopular opinion 1: I think Blake Lively is ugly!
Unpopular opinion 2: I've never watched the show/read the books, and I don't want to.

Battlestar Galactica
Unpopular opinion 1: Again, I've never watched the show (either incarnation), and I have no desire to. BSG is NOT the height of sci-fi entertainment, and it never will be.

O_O

It was probably not smart to ask about your unpopular opinions for some of my favorite shows... yeah, bad idea.

We, um, seem to disagree about EVERYTHING! And dude, why the Whedon hate? (Seriously, I'm interested.)

*starts twitching uncontrollably*

I wish there was like, an easy blog to link you to. I mean, there might be? There should be - all the reasons why feminists hate Joss Whedon. Mostly, because he claims to be one while really really not being such.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... yeah, you don't have to worry about that. I've read plenty of critiques... mostly because I've written several papers about the Whedon-verse... I, should, um... maybe we should just agree to never talk about Whedon ever, because we are clearly not going to agree here and I really like being mutual friends on the LJ... further, it all depends on how you qualify feminism in determining whether he is one or at least upholds some of the tenants of feminism. I understand the critique that's often presented in this arena, but there are several fundamental issues with some point (not all) commonly discussed... yeah, this can go nowhere good.

Oh, I also meant to talk to you about this comm. I wanted your help with. It's something fairly different and cool in my opinion, and I think you'd like it. I'll PM you about it. : )

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not talking about it is a REALLY good idea.

Sounds good. Hit me up, bb.

You are not truly feminist if you don't like Joss Whedon. He basically redefined feminism as a whole, and he is one of the biggest feminists ever. He has done so much for women's culture by adding such strong female characters like Buffy and Echo from Dollhouse.

Echo will one day get over her parent programming and become the true feminist she deserves to be! You just need to watch it for two more seasons or until it gets canceled! She'll come around!

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
...

Oh jeez. I wouldn't exactly go that far, though I think there's a decent case to be made that Whedon did a lot for fictional female characters in American and British popular media, but to say he's done "so much for women's culture" might be a but be a bit of a lofty statement to support. And this is coming from someone who own nearly all of Whedon's major works (including Toy Story, which he wrote the screenplay for).

And ummm... one of the biggest feminists ever? I'd say he's one of the most notable/noticed of third wave feminism, but that's another statement that a little... out there?

(Granted this is my opinion, but it is heavily influenced by some of the larger, collective academic opinions concerning Whedon.)

[identity profile] distractedone.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
..Oops! Sorry, I was just joking around. Heh. ;)

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... well now I feel slow. Sarcasm/joking is occasionally difficult to read on the interwebz. I was actually a little concerned oddly, but I tried to be as delicate about it as possible. Lol, major fail on my part. : P

(Kind of glad you don't see Whedon as the ultimate feminist though. Relieved really!)

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
NO MORE WHEDON TALK ON MY LJ.

WHEDON-FREE ZONE.

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, sorry. My bad! Want to talk about real feminists? I'm down for a good convo about Angela Davis or Judith Butler... perhaps some Foucault?

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm good, thanks.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
GOD SUCH DRAMA ON MY LJ.

[identity profile] aphrodite-mine.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And wow, I realize that I might have come off like I don't like Firefly? But really - its one of my favorite shows.
