I'm currently hyped up on early-Valentine's candy and I know I won't be able to sleep until I get this posted, at least in some sort of rudimentary form. If you're happening by this post and don't already know, rarewomen is a [community profile] yuletide -esque exchange based on the hard-to-find women in large fandoms and all women in small fandoms. Sign ups are happening now until Feb 8, so get on that! Here's a list of the eligible women and here's what's being offered so far.

As for you, potential future author, I obviously have a seriously unhealthy obsession with Rashida Jones. However, if you don't, I've included most of the other nominated women in each fandom... so don't feel pressured to write me Karen or Ann or Cindy. I would genuinely ADORE any fic about any of these women. And for all of these I would certainly love femslash, but don't feel limited by that. Anything about these women I will love. (And on the off chance that you're familiar with more than one fandom, a crossover would not only be awesome but would genuinely delight me. And I reserve my delight for special occasions.)

Here's the relevant bits of my sign up...

Large Fandom:
The Office
Women: Karen Filippelli, Katy
Optional Details: I love how both of these women, in their times, play a kind of second fiddle to Pam. I'd love to see how they negotiate their relationships with Jim, with Pam, with the other oddballs at the office. I'd love to see them interact, maybe post-series, or maybe in Utica. How do they grow and change from their time in the documentary? Who do they become? This should be obvious, but no Karen bashing in favor of Jim/Pam, please. If you're interested in ships, I'm interested in either of them with any woman in the office, and have a soft spot for Toby (and Michael, sometimes). Other than the Karen episodes, I quit watching around season five, but don't be afraid to reference current episodes if you want!

Fandom 2 (large or small): Our Idiot Brother
Women: Natalie Rochlin, Cindy, Liz Rochlin
Optional Details: I love how this movie pretends to be about Ned but is really about all of these fabulous and flawed women. I'd love something about Natalie/Cindy and how they navigate things during and after the movie. Um, ANYTHING about Cindy. Where did she get her awesome fashion sense and glasses? What drew Natalie to stand-up comedy? I ship Liz with Ned, but obviously that's isn't going to float everyone's boat, so anything about her in general. How'd she end up with her husband -- was there a time when they were happy? I love little scenes from daily life. I left off Miranda, but if you've seen the movie and/or we match on this you're more than welcome to write about her in a group gen or solo aspect.

Fandom 3 (large or small, totally optional): Parks & Recreation
Women: Ann Perkins, Leslie Knope, Lindsay Carlisle Shay, Lucy
Optional Details: I'd strongly prefer a Bechdel pass for this fandom, whether it be between two or more of these women, or another woman on the show. I love the absurd and detailed world-building in Pawnee, and I love the positivity of the show (however I'm sooo not averse to angst!) I ship any combination of these ladies, but if femslash isn't your thing that's totally okay! I'd love a story about Ann standing up for herself, about Leslie trying to reach out to her gay constituents, about Leslie and Lindsay when they worked together, and anything about Lucy (I'm not a heavy Lucy/Tom shipper, but sort of interested in Lucy/Ron if that floats your boat.) As for men to ship these ladies with... I'd definitely like the focus to be on the lady, but having a guy on the side and thoughts about feelings isn't bad! I like Ben and Ron best, and The Douche makes me laugh until my stomach hurts.

Here's a link to my dear Yuletide letter with more details about Our Idiot Brother and my general taste in fanfics.

mmmmm
Dear friends,

Do I want to write:

+ Ann/Leslie, the roller-derby-comes-to-Pawnee spec-script-ish idea
+ Ann/Leslie/Boys, the always-queer poly AU
+ Ann/Lucy, Ann/Leslie, the becoming-an-adult-doesn't-always-mean-these-things-fit-in-tidy-boxes idea
+ Something else? ...Something not even Parks? ...Something not starring Rashida Jones? [Okay, no. It has to be Rashida Jones. My pants say so.]

???

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW NOW even though it will be awhile before I properly start because recast_bigbang is GOING to get done first. DAMMIT.

Today: make it through practice without gut busting open, seriously, wtf is happening in my intestines right now? Also, don't kill anyone who is on the list of Dammit You Are Really Not Helping This League and I Begged My Parents For Money Today So Quiet You.
Tomorrow: get through work, do some writing, maybe, and GOD DAMNIT, relax and enjoy some pizza and Parks with your lesbians. (Skins?) Oh and take a few minutes to update the site because you said you would!
Wednesday: work, therapy ugh fuck, femslash_today update, rarewomen sign ups going live hopefully? CROSSING MY FINGERS, don't drink don't drink don't drink.
Thursday: work late! write! uh... write more! Parks! review! sleep!
Friday: work, admin stuff, Fringe, MEAT TRAY?!, sleep sleep sleep get some sleep please oh god. (Bomb Girls?) hope really hard that because the weekend looks mostly stress free you won't have an Anxiety Episode and ruin the time off.
Saturday: web meeting part deux - the "I had a panic attack and canceled the last one" edition, catch up on watching the things (The Good Wife!)
Sunday: relax. more sleep.

And at some point in the week:
- start re-reading Alias
- finish the wedding scene/get to 4500 words
- narrow down rarewomen sign up... I know I'm requesting Parks, but my other two slots are up for debate
goddesses
 See what I did there?

I took a huge nap today, so even though I feel like sleeping I'm going to go ahead and put together my epic rec post!

Sites:
- annperkinswears - A recent discovery, this blog breaks down Ann's amazing wardrobe and where you can purchase it.
- asofterpawnee - run by plays-with-squirrels, this A Softer World-inspired blog is Ann x Leslie (and Ann, in general) friendly!
- parksandfic - One-stop shop for any and all Parks fic
- parksandreckink - Just what it sounds like. Not a ton of femslash (like most of fandom it's predominately Ben/Leslie)
- fyeahannperkins - What it says on the tin. All the best Ann moments from each Parks episode, and the runners are Ann x Leslie friendly!

Fic:
Leslie/Ann
- and did you tell billy you loved him? did you say 'billy, i love you'? by dollsome - post relationship run down, with Ann having feelings and explaining them away

- a series of drabbles: Not Yet, but One Day and Trying it Out by michellek - a bit of future AU written early in the series about Leslie's political aspirations
- Not Exactly Risky by doesnt_go_away - an admittedly silly bit of smut
- a few pieces: Decompression and Good  Samaritans /Extra, Extra by shoutoutout - a rare bit of angst followed by great dialogue.
- Flying Solo by fearlessfan - Ann learns how to be single and in the process falls for Leslie
- something more beautiful than is there by gloss **this is literally my favorite fic ever. I re-read it about once a month** - I struggle to come up with words to talk about this fic because it's become such an integral part of my relationship with the show. In short, read it. Read it. Read it.

Ann gen, friendship
- Red Letter Day by shinealightonme - A series of holidays celebrated with the Parks department
- 0.0109% of the Way to the Moon by myrifique - Ann and Leslie work on a healthy Pawnee project together
- Moonbounce by sunsetglow - Planning Leslie's birthday

Other Ann ships
- Antiphonal Twilights by voleuse - Ann/Leslie/Ben - the story I was gifted for this years 3_ships. If you like snowed in trope fic, you'll love this.

If you have any recs for other Ann fic hit me up in the comments. I'm primarily interested in Ann/Ben/(Leslie) or Ann/Ben/Leslie or Ann/Ron, or the obvious choice Ann/Leslie.

Leslie Knope-inspired breakfast for dinner. Two waffles with syrup and whipped cream, an egg & cheese muffin because Ann says something about how sugar will kill her and protein is important. Wash it down with a creamsicle-flavor milk shake (bonus whipped cream).
ETA: Also wine. Because wine is a fruit no matter what Ann says. And she's drinking too so it's okay.

~disclaimer~ Had a bit of a crappy day with the MU news, and needed something concrete and organization-based to work on. Thus, this post.

In the process of (mostly) moving to Dreamwidth, I've accrued a lot of really cool friends/followers/whatever you call it on this site and I realize that I talk, frequently, about things that I assume everyone knows about but are possibly really insular. So...

I'm back into mood swing-mode, which is nice when it's nice and bad when it's bad. After awesome!weekend (TM) I've had three days of the blahs culminating last night when I got home from therapy, promptly got drunk and attempted to self-sabotage my relationship. WTF, self. Thankfully, [personal profile] majesdane  is kind of a saint and we talked and are cool, and guys*. Don't let me post-therapy drink! This is a BAD LIFE CHOICE. So yeah, despite it being all wintery out now, I'm feeling better today, and hopefully will stay that way for a bit.

But! On to GOOD LIFE CHOICE(s): I am finally on season 3 of The Good Wife and OH MY GOD ALL OF THE FEELINGS. I ship everyone/everyone which I, as a rule, generally don't do. And I'm going to watch Fringe LIVE on Friday! ALL. OF. THE. FEELINGS. (Oh yeah, and Parks is back tonight and oh god don't even try to talk to me when I get home from work because I am probably the only person on the planet who sobs for like an hour after watching a comedy.) I also finally stood up for anxiety-ridden self and told the derby board that I needed to take a step back from my web duties because they were stressing me the fuck out... so, my wife promptly found a sponsor to help me with the complicated stressy stuff! EEE!

I decided to nix my Fringe-fic for [community profile] fivetimesbb  as it was stressing me out. So, now focusing on some fun Galentine's day fic, a potentially epic The Inside crossover for [community profile] fivetimesbb , THE HAPPIEST AND GAYEST STORY EVER for recastbigbang (@LJ) (Imagine Me & You as told in Parks & Rec universe) and trying to figure out what to write for [community profile] queer_bigbang  -- do I want to write another Ann Perkins-is-a-giant-gaymo big bang? Is there another queer-tastic character I love as much as Ann Perkins? I DON'T KNOW. GIVE ME THOUGHTS.

*Can I just take a moment here to brag on MY FREAKING AMAZING FRIENDS? I can't even really say more than *MASSIVE FLAIL* but, really. AMAZING.

I'm really scared to say something like "2012 is going awesome!!!!!!" but dude. It's true. My problems haven't gone away, but I seem to be functioning better and god, today I was seriously SO HAPPY without approaching any sort of mania. Chalk it up to derby kicking off again, or maybe I just needed time with my wives (lifting weight: currently at 125 legs, 45 arms), or maybe it was requesting Selena Gomez at the skating rink and not giving a damn who saw me enjoy the fuck out of it ("Do you see how happy she looks?" - wife MeYa). I don't know, but suddenly it doesn't seem to matter that I couldn't find pants in my size this morning, or that another work week starts on Monday.

Oh, and it didn't hurt to come home to a full fandom_stocking with goodies like icons and greetings and fics, and YOU GUYS CAN I JUST TELL YOU ABOUT THESE FICS?!

There's Shoes by rise_your_dead (Bridesmaids, Rita/Becca) which is a little slice-of-life piece contemplating the things that change and the things that don't. There's Baby Shampoo by [personal profile] st_aurafina (The Inside/Twin Peaks (The Magician Longs to See-verse, Rebecca Locke, Audrey Horne) in which they are roommates(!) and Rebecca is full of angst and Audrey is a fixer. There's Built to Last by [personal profile] gloss (Our Idiot Brother, Liz/Ned) which... honestly, I'm flabbergasted actually got written and on top of that is fabulous and Cindy wears a monocle and there is hippie cuddling!

In short, dear world: <3

Second:

GALENTINE'S DAY IS NIGH UPON US
How it works:

-- Just comment to this post! I can't make you mosaic portraits from diet soda bottles, but I can make you meta, recs, ficlets or graphics, and I can certainly tell you why you're awesome.
-- If you want, include a question/request for a bit of meta or recs of a certain kind, or some prompts(could just be fandoms/actors), and I may write you a twitfic or a drabble or a comment fic of unpredictable length, or make you a mini-picspam or possibly a very wee vidlet, or do something totally random, if inspiration strikes. (Answers may or may not all happen by February 14 itself but they will happen!)
-- For reference, fandoms are the usual suspects: Parks & Recreation, Fringe, The Good Wife, Bomb Girls, Lost Girl, Party Down, Up All Night, United States of Tara, The Hunger Games, various movies, various RPF
-- You don't have to be on my flist (nor do you have to be a gal) to come to the party. If you can see this, you are invited!
-- Happy (early) Galentine's Day!

Back to derby tonight and I'm super excited (with a pinch of natural nervousness). I'm not sure if we're even going to be skating tonight, as we're going over a lot of strategy and playing "sock derby" which is just like it sounds. I've been a bit adrift lately, not really feeling the deadline pressure on anything though there are some things on the horizon.

I suppose the biggest news is that I'm going to have a roommate. [profile] vilomsious is making the long journey to the Midwest and staying with me for a few months. *cheers silently at desk* I've been working on two fics for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (one Astrid-centric that's 1/5 done, the other Rebecca Locke-centric) and one for [livejournal.com profile] recast_bigbang which I'm sort of ridiculously excited about. I have literally 3k of notes written up on it. Other than that, I've been doing some writing for [community profile] kink_bingo to fill my Parks & Rec itch.

Honestly, and you probably guessed as much, I'm bored at work, antsy about derby, and don't have anything real to report.

I am almost passing out with how much I am in love with my [community profile] 3_ships story, Antiphonal Twilights which was written by someone I do not yet know but who is now my BEST FRIEND. It is Ann/Leslie/Ben and they are SNOWED IN and ASLDH GOD GUTTERAL NOISE let me show you my kink, all of them. Shall I outline the AWESOMENESS of this fic? SHALL I?cut for spoilers )

So, basically, I am a flailing mess of a person sitting at my desk, pretending to function normally.

---

That said, I wrote TWO fics in the [community profile] 3_ships archive this year and if you can guess one, I'll write you 1000 words -- both, and double that or get two fics.

Is anyone willing to beta some [community profile] kink_bingo  fic? Working knowledge of Parks & Rec (current season) necessary. PM or email if you'd rather not comment.

--

Otherwise, I finished The Hunger Games trilogy and am so worn out that I can't even write fix-it fic (which is usually my go-to therapy) at this point. Sometime in the future, there will be Johanna/Annie something, JUST BECAUSE I CAN.

Anyone watching Bomb Girls? I'm super excited to ~obtain~ it when I get home.

I think if I make a lot of truly positive choices this year and counteract that with a lot of alcohol (to aide in the positive choices, natch) then I might finally even out the kooky scales of my mind/mood.

Eye doctor went well today, if having no solution is good. I mean, as far as he can tell I'm essentially too stressed or psychosomatically creating these symptoms. So, yay for having nothing wrong, but also boo. Had dinner with my mom, too, and I actually am not freaking out with anxiety afterwards. She's probably getting divorced, which sucks, but. *shrugs* Her life.

I assume folks follow my twitter or feed if you want my fic, but if you are new to me.. [syndicated profile] aphroditemineficfeed_feed and I wrote two stories for yuletide this year:

-- unless you can die when the dream is past for [personal profile] majesdane  (who, btw, it was hell keeping this a secret from) is Playboy Club/Sucker Punch, Alice/Frances/gayness.
-- just like heaven for SadieFlood is Bandits (1997), Emma/Luna/my highschool fandom love and the story I've needed to write for almost 10 years

---

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before? Was in a wedding, was 26 years old, wrote over 9000 words, totaled a car, won a derby bout, got a tattoo.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I can't find any written out, but I know my goal of "write more, damnit" was achieved. However I did mention wanting to finish my thesis, and I don't think that will ever happen.

~*~ SCROLL DOWN FOR FIC RECS ~*~

It's always really lovely when the people who know you, know you well enough to get you things you didn't even know you wanted. That said, there are always those who simply... don't. (Not that I'm not grateful for the bonus check, or the snack food or cookies -- they made nice regifting material!) I was surprised by a few gifts this season -- Julie gave me a fabulously functional onesie PJ, Betsy sent me a No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July which I've been aching to read in print for ages (I have the audio book). My stepbrother and his wife somehow managed to remember that I was reading a book by Maggie O'Farrell over Thanksgiving, and threw in a "Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History" magnet, which is kind of exceptional coming from two people who generally don't seem to "get" feminism.

I was really touched to be remembered by some ~online~ folk: [personal profile] escritoireazul sent me a lovely card, and wrote me Underneath Your Skin -- a sort of darkening and heightening of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale. I love the matriarchy in place, and the style. Jordan (who I'm not sure is on DW?) sent me a card that made me dissolve into gigglefits. [personal profile] robotjen wrote a fabulous little Ann/Leslie fic which is probably the *easiest* way to make my day. My co-worker Angie, and my boss at TVGrapevine.com also sent me thoughtful holiday notes. And just today I got a burned copy of Childrens' Hospital season 1 and 2 in the mail from my twitter pal, Chris. <3 All of you.

As for my family, I had a better holiday at home than I anticipated (due in no small part to retreating to my dad's house and drinking and spending half of that time at the movies (I recommend both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Young Adult, with a few trigger warnings that I'll elaborate on if you like.) My mom seems to have locked on to me having a steady relationship with only my cats as a cue for gift-giving, and made an attempt at picking out a movie because "it looked weird". She's sweet when she's not being unintentionally emotionally abusive. Sigh. Amanda gave me Black Swan (which I actually didn't have yet!), David gave me derby socks, and Stephen surprised me with new speakers for my desktop because I'd complained once about not being able to hear my game. The big non-surprise was from my dad and stepmom, a Kindle Fire, which I love but haven't quite figured out how to optimize for use yet.

On the fic front, other than the two I already mentioned, I got a truly incredible [community profile] yuletide  fic this year. My author wrote Melancholia fic focusing on Justine (mostly), and made me shocked, joyous, and sobbing on Christmas morning. Check it out if you've seen the film: A Cage that Keeps Me. Really, I can't do it justice. There are these little nuancey moments of phrasing. And the whole concept is just so artfully rendered and unexpected that it feels like the sort of story I could read year after year and still find things to swoon over.

I haven't read many other fics in the archive, but here are a few that I really enjoyed:

Parks & Recreation~
There was no Leslie/Ann this year (I KNOW) but the second best thing in this fandom is the incredible canon friendship between those two and the works that stem from it. Two stood out for me this year, 0.0109% of the Way to the Moon, in which Ann and Leslie team up to organize a joint Health/Parks initiative and Red Letter Day which I want to squish to pieces, marry, and impregnate. Seriously. It has everything I could ever want in an episode -- Ann in a starring role, interacting with everyone, and making me laugh and cry almost in the same breath.
Baby Mama~
Oh, throwback ship of my heart, Kate/Angie. Four Times Pregnancy Totally Got in the Way of Making Out  (and one time it didn't) is exactly what it says on the tin, but so much more: the author makes all of this feel like canon (and let's face it, the movie wasn't so far off) with the ups and downs and feelings.
Big Love~
I don't normally read Nicki/Alby, or enjoy fics that take place around season 4/5, but this fic, Thistle & Weeds (which I had the pleasure of betaing, though I would rec it regardless) made me reconsider both. I was startled by how easily the narration hit some kinks of mine, and felt compelled to re-watch some of the episodes, a feeling which hasn't hit me since they aired and I rage blackouted all over them.
Black Swan~
swallow her whole star intact hit me like some kind of sex-drugs-dance freight train. Damn, what a sexy, beautiful, and intricate story.
Bridesmaids~
I'm happy to see my OTP get some love, and with a really great story. Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better is a hilarious piece of fiction that makes the realistic segue from straight!Annie to really, really gay Annie seem as easy as baking a cupcake.
Lost Girl~
I can't speak to most of the fic for this fandom as I don't read much, but my little pet pairing Bo/Kenzi had a truly sweet and naturally evolving story that I enjoyed: Countdown to the Start featured realistic voices and KISSING (sometimes I am easy to please).
Party Down~
One of the downsides to having an extensive personal canon for a character you love is that some truly otherwise excellent stories get frustratingly window-closed because of some tic that Casey-in-my-head can't quite jive with. That said, write your name on the earth in gasoline is a story I didn't expect to like but, damn, the perfectly in-character narration and wonderfully detailed relationship (on top of some hilarious and inside-jokey SNL references) won me over in a big way.

I'll be back with more recs, I'm sure, when fandom_stocking and [community profile] 3_ships go live.

[Quick note: I wrote two stories for yuletide, two for 3_ships, and one for fandom stocking that I may or may not have changed recipients for at the last minute because good lord performance anxiety, Batman. But I feel good about my yuletide and 3_ships stuff. And I feel good about f_s, but it's the sort of story you don't really want to give TO someone without a specific request. Pah. Exhale, babe.]

Still (yes) working on that Holiday Recap post -- I want to be as complete as possible! Anyway, my eyes hurt and I don't feel like working so here's a list of mid-season shows I might try out.
  • DEGRASSI IS BACK
  • SKINS IS BACK
  • House of Lies (Showtime) looks funny and dark and nice cast, babe.
  • Are You There, Chelsea? will be given a try, because funny women, yes.
  • Lost Girl will OFFICIALLY be on US TV! Woo! I can stop feeling guilty about checking in on GetGlue
  • Luck (HBO) could be good? I'm not sure yet.
  • GCB (ABC) - I will fully admit to this sounding right up my alley.
  • I wish Scandal looked better, but ahgh.
  • Don't Trust the Bitches in Apt 23... looks to be from most counts a case of Cougar Town-esque bad naming but really funny stuff. Jury is out.
  • Best Friends Forever (NBC) more funny women? MORE FUNNY WOMEN!
  • ...and I feel like some other stuff is returning, but I guess I don't watch any of it?

-- Per tradition, if you can guess what story I wrote in a given anonymous fic exchange before the reveal, you get a fic yourself! (Note: this year, I participated in yuletide x2, fandom_stocking, and 3_ships x2, the later two of which are not live let alone revealed. I wrote three fandoms for the first time, one crossover, a fine smattering of het for once, one of my oldest fandoms, and two of my newest. If you betaed for me or I told you what I wrote, you are ineligible!)

-- Do you have a birthday coming up? Leave the date and a prompt and I'll try to write you something.

-- I'm also taking requests for mini-drabbles (50-100 words)
derby oh my god
I'm slowly working on a holiday recap post (including some yuletide and other recs) but in the meantime, a small personal update.
  • I have an eye appointment in a week (which will be bundles of fun without insurance) because I can only about five hours before developing an eye-ache. Worse on days when I spend the day in front of the computer, or drive, or attempt to watch a movie or TV... so every day, basically.
  • Looking at my 2012 planner is making me pretty excited. I have mixed feelings about derby still, and I've basically given up on graduating, but there are some writing projects on the horizon that have me looking forward instead of dreading the time required. I'm gaining a roommate in February, turning 27, and will be one more year closer to the future.
  • I redecorated today! I actually didn't do very much, but I moved around some living room furniture, cleared all of the heat grates in case I actually turn on the heat (lol) and CLEANED. I also did laundry. I don't know what came over me.
  • In less positive news, my mother actually told my younger sister that she regrets marrying her husband. [long inhale, release] Can I just say that her needing to share this sort of personal details basically ruined my teenage years. The sentiment itself isn't too shocking -- they only dated for about six months, and we pretty much unanimously thought it was a terrible idea, but you know, she's an adult, she's got to make her own choices. The issue I have here is that, on the pretext of keeping her informed of things that "might affect her" my mom is burdening my sister in the same way she did me around my parents' divorce. I can't wait for my sister to get out of there, to move down here for school and to find that breath of fresh air she's so far only been able to get at work.
  • Current projects: 3_ships pinch hit. fivetimesbb story 1. rarewomen nominations (soon).
In short, despite some things, I'm feeling good. And maybe it's just the rush of being home after being "home", or spending the morning with my sister (even though she didn't like Young Adult, bah), or the feeling of accomplishment when I actually finish something... It might just be my cats snuggling me again after a long weekend away. Even if Rupert did get drool all over my new PJ pants.
